Note: Every year, before mid-October, print a copy of your current year tax return and save it as a tax file and pdf, too. That way you will have it when you need it for school, a loan, next year’s tax return, etc. without going through a lot of aggravation (and expense) to get it.

I lost my previously downloaded returns due to a failing drive. I need to access my returns from prior years (2017 and earlier). My 2018 return was done with the Free Edition. This link says that I can upgrade to Plus AFTER FILING to still gain access to the previous returns however the instructions don't appear to be accurate. There is no Add a State link so I can't pay for Plus. What do I need to do to pay for Plus to access the prior returns?

So I guess there must be a cutoff date that you must be inside of to reopen the 2018 return and to be able to upgrade to Plus after filing. I have received no responses and see no other way to upgrade to Plus at this point other than waiting until the beginning of the year and paying for Plus when I file my 2019 return. Surely I should be able to get my prior returns at that point.

One user posted what he did to pay for Plus now to unlock prior years. So try this.......

"After signing in, I clicked "Help" in the top right corner.

On the right side of the screen, a window opened up with a search bar, FAQ's, and at the bottom "Contact us"

I clicked "Contact us" and it said that I needed to purchase Plus to be able to talk.

I believe "purchase" or "Plus" was a hyperlink which I clicked and was taken to a page to confirm my payment info. After I did that, I had access to my previous year tax returns. "

That might only work during business hours M-F 5-5pm Pacific time (8-8 Eastern). And we don't know if that will give you Plus for just 2018 or also 2019.

To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
