You can still file your prior year taxes, up to three years late.  So long as you do not owe taxes to the IRS or state government, there is no penalty for filing late.

However, you will need to print and mail your returns, as e-filing for 2015 returns was disabled October of 2016.  In order to access your 2015 returns, you will need to upgrade your account to at least PLUS benefits.

If you have not already filed your 2016 return:

  1. Log in to your TurboTax account.
  2. If you choose to file using the Federal Free Edition of TurboTax, you will automatically be started with PLUS benefits.  Other options will allow access to your prior year returns without PLUS benefits.
  3. Continue through the start up process until you are asked to enter your income information.  If you wish, you can complete your 2016 return now.
  4. Click on the File tab (or if you are completing your 2016 return, you will arrive here automatically).
  5. Click Start next to Step 1 to review your order.
  6. Click View Payment Options
  7. Pay for PLUS benefits using a card payment
  8. You can now access your 2015 return to print it out and mail it in.

If you have already filed your 2016 return:

  1. Log in to your TurboTax account
  2. Underneath your 2016 Summary you will see Some Things You Can Do.  Click on Add a state (you will not be adding a state, this is to get you into your return)
  3. Once in your 2016 return, click on Upgrade at the top of your screen
  4. Choose PLUS benefits
  5. Once PLUS has been added to your account, click on the File tab
  6. Click Start or Revisit next to Step 1
  7. Pay for your PLUS benefits using a card payment
  8. You can now access your 2015 return to print and mail
