I paid for MAX Benefits. Now I can't file because it requires a state and zip code. But I live outside US so I don't have a state and zip code. Now I can't file at all!

What if you have already paid for MAX? If you live outside of the US, it won't let you file without a state and zip code. What do you do?

You can now file federal (IRS) returns if you or your employer has a non-U.S. address. However, there are some restrictions regarding foreign-address returns:

  • IRS regulations require a U.S. bank account to receive your tax refund, and you'll need a U.S. bank account (or credit/debit card with a U.S. billing address) if paying additional federal taxes owed.
  • Like many stateside merchants, we require a U.S. billing address to pay for TurboTax if using a credit or debit card.
    • If you're deducting fees from your refund with the optional Pay With My Refund service, you'll need a U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO address.
  • Free products like TurboTax Free Edition and TurboTax Easy Extension require a U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO address upon registration.

Some states also let you e-file with non-U.S. addresses. We'll let you know if your state supports this.

To enter a foreign address into TurboTax:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open or continue your return.
  2. Select My Info from the left menu.
  3. On the Personal info summary page, select Edit next to Taxpayer.
  4. Go to 2. Tell us the state(s) you lived in and select Foreign or U.S Possession from the drop down list (it's all the way at the bottom).
  5. Select the Continue button at the bottom.
  6. Select Edit next to  Mailing Address and choose Foreign country from Type of mailing address drop down list.
  7. Input your address in the appropriate fields, select your country from the drop down list, and select Continue.

The issue is if you've paid for Max you can't remove it.

I talked to support. Living outside the US and purchasing Max completely breaks the system.

1. You can't file with Max and live outside the US

2. If you've paid for Max you can't remove it

How did this get past QA! 😨

Seems you can work around this bug.

1. Click on "My info" and temporarily update your mailing address to a US one

2. Go to "File" and click "Start" on step 3

3. Sign the disclosure form

4. Go back to "My info" and update to your foreign address

5. Return to "File" and proceed

Interesting ... it's the same workaround used to pay the TT fees earlier in the FILE tab.

I had the same problem. It was an endless loop. To fix the problem, I had to use a US. PO box address for my "Mailing Address"  I mentioned to the TurboTax live person. Hopefully, they submitted the glitch and will fix it next year
