Why won't TurboTax 2022 let me enter 0.00 in column B on my form 1095-A, when it did let me enter 0.00 in past years? What changed for 2022?

I know about the SLCSP calculation tool. However, I'm afraid to deviate from the 1095-A form. Why would it be wrong?

Put simply zero is not possible if you got PTC or qualify for them. Turbotax should not have allowed zero's in previous years which would have prompted this response hopefully

When there is no amount (zero) in columns B and C of the Form 1095-A this means that you did not receive any advance payments of the premium tax credit (APTC). This generally occurs when the Marketplace determines you are ineligible for the premium tax credit at enrollment because your income was outside of the eligibility range or if you declined to receive APTC instead preferring to claim the credit on your return.

How to Get the Correct Numbers for Column B
To even see if you could possibly get the tax credit, you need the right information for Column B. Most tax software won’t let you enter all zeros for Column B anyway. Thankfully, it’s rather easy. No need to file a request for a “corrected” form or fill out any paperwork.  hop on over to this page  https://www.healthcare.gov/tax-tool/#/   Health Coverage Tax Tool

Here you’ll find a tool to “Figure out your premium tax credit: Get your ‘second lowest cost Silver plan’ (SLCSP) amount. You’ll use it to fill out IRS form 8962,

This is *crazy*!! My 1095-A form has 0.00 in columns A, B & C for November through December. I've entered that in Turbotax but when trying to e-file I get an error message and get taken back to Form 1095-A!!!

ARGH, what to do!!!

Why won't TurboTax 2022 let me enter 0.00 in column B on my form 1095-A, when it did let me enter 0.00 in past years? What changed for 2022?

I had to enter 0.01 to get it to work.

Why won't TurboTax 2022 let me enter 0.00 in column B on my form 1095-A, when it did let me enter 0.00 in past years? What changed for 2022?

I needed to delete the 0.00 entered AND delete form #8962 which thought a second person was on the Healthcare Marketplace account with me.

Amen & thank you for TurboTax phone support ❤️

It is absolutely insane and unacceptable that entering the exact numbers provided in the state 1095 causes Turbotax to stop you from moving forward with your taxes; that you would have to lie to move forward.  How many people are compelled to call the highly advertised TurboTax help at this point?  How many people pay out the ash for that help, thinking it is free based on the advertising?

Unfortunately, not all issuers of Forms 1095-A follow the same conventions as to how to fill out the columns. Follow these steps to enter Form 1095-A in TurboTax and avoid review errors:

If you didn't have Marketplace insurance all year, you can leave column A blank for the months you didn't have it.  Then columns B & C will not be an issue.

If you have an amount in column A, then the amount in column B can't be zero. You must enter the Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP). The SLCSP is the second-lowest priced health insurance plan in the Silver category that was available when you applied for insurance at Healthcare Marketplace.

You can use the Health coverage tax tool to figure out how to get the SLCSP if it is not on your Form 1095-A.

Healthcare Tool

The amount in column C can be zero if you didn't take a monthly subsidy to help pay for your health insurance premiums.

  • If you did get a monthly subsidy to help pay for your health insurance premiums, enter the monthly amount in column C.

See this article for more information about the Premium Tax Credit.

TurboTax will automatically fill out Form 8962 once you enter your Form 1095-A.

I entered the amounts from my 1095-A in column A, and the correct amount for column B, but Turbo Tax insists I enter an amount for column C. I did not receive any subsidy so I don't know what to enter.

You should not enter zeroes in TurboTax when entering your Form 1095-A.  Leave the spot blank instead.

Otherwise, you should enter your Form 1095-A as it is shown unless you believe it to be incorrect.  If you believe there's an error on your Form 1095-A you should contact the issuer of the form.

Leave it blank and it should eliminate that error.

So what do I do if I did pay for the entire year, so every month for column A is filled, but it's a $0.00 for all months for column B and C?

If you paid full price and did not get the tax credit and are sure you do not qualify for the tax credit, you do not need to fill out form 8962.

When you have a premium amount entered in column A, you are now required to enter the SLCSP for column B.    Without the correct SLCSP amount, the Premium Tax Credit will be incorrectly calculated.   @ClarDold     For months that no premium was paid, you can leave all columns blank.   For any months, a premium was paid, column C can be blank (don't enter zeros), but in order to calculate correctly, TurboTax needs the correct SLCSP entered in column B.

The SLCSP premium is incorrect if:

  • Part III, Column B has a “0” or is blank for any month someone in your household had the Marketplace plan (premium paid in column A)
  • You had changes in your household that you didn’t tell the Marketplace about — like having a baby, moving, getting married or divorced, or losing a dependent

If either applies to you, use our tax tool to get the premium for your second-lowest cost Silver plan (SLCSP).
