Why does Turbotax make me choose Expert Assist?

You are not required to use expert assistance. If you selected live assistance by accident you can remove it.  Follow the steps below.

You can clear your return and start over as long as you haven’t paid yet. After clearing your return, you can select the TurboTax product that best suits your needs.

If you started in a different TurboTax product but added TurboTax Live

You can remove TurboTax Live as long as you haven't used the Tax Expert feature. Here's what to do:

1. With your tax return open, select File.
2. Proceed through the screens until you reach the Just a few steps left... screen, then select Start or Revisit next to Step 1: Review Your Order.
3. On the order summary screen, select Downgrade.

The video says once you delete your return's information and start over you will be able to choose which package you want to proceed with.  I followed the directions, and it returns you right back to filing with Expert Help.  TurboTax has roped the novice user into starting off the bat using the expensive option, and tries to bait you into pushing the "Ask for Live Help" button - because once you do that, you can't file that return WITHOUT paying for the expert help (unless you once again delete the return's info and start all over again).  Make sure you do NOT ask for "Live Help", continue to fill out the questions with your info, and soon you will be asked to use their "MAX..." option (I don't remember the name of it). Decline, and then it will tell you that you can choose, later on in the return, which product you want to use - just make sure you don't use their "LIVE HELP" before getting there!
