According to the oficial tax.ny.gov website:
"The cost of tax preparation software always includes the e-filing service; New York State law prohibits additional charges."

When using the TurboTax desktop editions, a New York state tax return is free to e-file.
I agree. The Federal + State is VERY misleading. You believe you are purchasing the e-file package. What a crock. I'll find a different way to file taxes next year!
The included state is for the part of the program that applies to your state.
The fee for electronic filing is NOT included, so you either have to pay it or opt to not file electronically, in which case you will have to print and mail the state forms. It has been this way for years.
That should be FALSE ADVERTISING
It's actually $45 for the state return now.....
What is $45? It is $25 to efile a state return. It is $45 if you need to buy a second different state PROGRAM like to buy Oregon when you already had California for free. Then it is still $25 to efile each state (in addition to the 45). Or you can print and mail state for free.
OR the $45 could be the Extra Refund Processing Service charge in California IF you want the efile fee deducted from a federal refund. Then it would be $25+45=$70. Which you can avoid by paying the fee upfront with a credit card.
Is this true?
unfortunately...yep.
Even though the box literally says "Federal E-File + State"...it really means Federal E-file...(pause) and also State paperwork, but NOT State e-file.
