Why did the irs change my refund amount

I did the social security worksheet and it told me that it was not taxable so I do not need to claim it. It looks like they added it in to adjust our total income. Why?

Do you mean you entered other income but did not enter your Social Security income?  That was a mistake.  You should have entered your SSA1099 if you had other income.  You are supposed to enter the SSA1099 exactly as it appears and let the software do the calculations about the SS and how much of it (if any) is taxable.

If you want to amend to make sure the IRS adjustment and the calculations you get with a 1040X agree:

Amend 2017

You should not use the worksheet on the back of the SSA-1099. It can be complicated to figure out even though it looks simple. Turbo Tax figures it all out for you.  When you enter 1/2 of your ss on line B it is not being subtracted from anything.  It is being ADDED to ALL your other income to see if any of the ss will be taxable to you. To see the Social Security Benefits Worksheet  in Turbo Tax you would have to save your return with all the worksheets to your computer.

I have helped several people see where they went wrong when figuring the SS worksheet.  And if the IRS changed or added any other income (like increased the taxable amount of any 1099R you got) it will make more of your SS taxable.

You have to report all your income even if you think it's not taxable.  Even $1 of bank interest you don't get a 1099 for.
