where is a QCD entered in the process

The QCD is entered when entering the form 1099-R for it.

While entering your form 1099-R, if you have entered a birth date which makes you older than 70 1/2 in the tax year, TurboTax will ask you if any portion of your distribution was transferred to charity. Answer Yes to that question and you can then enter the amount transferred to charity.

The code in box 7 of form 1099-R must be 7 and the box IRA/SEP/SIMPLE must be checked.

TurboTax will then reduce the taxable amount by the amount transferred to charity.

I have a birthday that makes me old enough for a QCD, but Turbo Tax Deluxe did not ask me about QCDs when I entered the IRA 1099-R.  Can I prompt it?

Thanks.

Yes, what is the code is Box 7, and is the IRA/SIMPLE/SEP box checked?   If you are over 70.5, you should get the prompt.     How do I enter Qualified Charitable Distributions?  @kcgongaware

A qualified charitable distribution, or QCD, is a distribution of funds from your IRA (other than an active SEP or SIMPLE IRA) directly by the trustee to a qualified charitable organization. The charity must be a 501(c)(3) organization and eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.

To report a QCD, you’ll use a 1099-R form. While entering your 1099-R in TurboTax, be sure to select the correct box 7 distribution code. You’ll then be prompted to confirm the amount donated.

TurboTax includes the full amount of the distribution reported on your Form 1099-R on line 4a (IRA Distributions) of your Form 1040 or 1040-SR. The taxable amount reported on Line 4b will be the total distribution less the QCD amount and will have "QCD" entered next to it.   QCD Rules

I used the desktop version of TurboTax for my 2025 taxes. Several responses to where to enter the QCD amount have been made. Supposedly, TurboTax will open a page for you to select a condition from after entering your 1099-R. After several attempts this screen never appeared for me.

I finally solved the issue by selecting the Forms icon in the upper right hand corner of the TurboTax screen. If you were already in the 1099-R form in the step-by-step screen TurboTax will open the correct form for you. Otherwise, you will need to search for the correct form in the form list on the left.

When you are on the correct form scroll down until you find the section called "Qualified Charitable Distribution". Enter the amount of contribution you made in the box on that line.

Be careful when you return to the step-by-step process that you do not review this particular 1099-R. TurboTax will erase what you entered on that line if you do. Just proceed on from this point.

If you do need to review any of your 1099-Rs be careful not to reopen this one or any others where you listed a QCD or you will need to reopen the actual form and reinput the QCD value.

I have the Desktop program too.   You mean a 1099R?  QCD is not on a 1099-DIV.  Entering a QCD was very easy and simple.

You fill out the 1099R exactly as shown. For 2025 there might be a new code Y on the 1099R for QCD. The IRS does not require financial institutions to use code Y to report QCDs yet, instead making the use of code Y optional. I got my 1099R from Vanguard for my QCD and it only had code 7 in box 7.

If you are over 70 1/2 then after you enter the 1099R keep going. In my Desktop program one of the next screens will say…Do any of these situations apply to you with a list. The 7th item is "I transferred all or part of this money directly to charity". Check that and the next screen will be either for RMD info or ask how much was transferred to Charity. Just keep going though all the screens.

Then do NOT enter it again under Deductions & Credits. It only goes on the 1099R entry. Otherwise you would be deducting it twice.

@StuKHi   How old are you?   If that screen didn't show up for you maybe  you were not 70 1/2.  Maybe go back to Personal Info and check your birth date.
