Do not try to do any fancy math. Just enter your 1099G exactly as it appears. The software will take care of all of the calculations regarding how much of it is taxable.
You will have to enter a 1099G that is issued by your state.
Some states will mail out the 1099G. Or you might need to go to your state’s unemployment website and use the password, etc. that you have been using to certify for weekly benefits to get your 1099G from the state’s site.
Enter your 1099G in Federal>Wages & Income>Unemployment
Go through the screens very carefully, making sure to enter any federal/state tax you had withheld from the unemployment.
You enter the total of all unemployment compensation you received in 2020 as shown the Form 1099-G that you received from your state. The TurboTax program will calculate the unemployment compensation exclusion you are eligible to receive.
To enter unemployment compensation
Or enter unemployment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to unemployment
If you had taxes withheld from the unemployment compensation -
On the screen What's the total amount you received on your 1099-G? check the box Federal or state income tax was withheld on this payment.
The exclusion is reported on Schedule 1 Line 8 as a negative number. The unemployment compensation received is on Line 7 of Schedule 1. The result flows to Form 1040 Line 8.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
