The 2019 software will not be released until late November 2019. Yes, there will still be Free Edition, Deluxe, Premier and Self-Employed for online editions, and Basic, Deluxe, Premier and Home and Business for desktop editions.
There is not a difference in the "speed" of using online vs. desktop. It is a personal preference for many, and also a matter of cost effectiveness.
When you use Online TurboTax, you get one return per fee. Each return needs its own account and user ID. If you use the same account and user ID for a second return, you overwrite the first one and lose it forever.
When you use Desktop TurboTax, which you install from a CD or download to your own hard drive, you can prepare and e-file multiple returns for the cost of the software. You can e-file up to 5 Federal returns—more if you mail the additional ones. If you have multiple returns to prepare for family members, Desktop is more cost effective.
The TurboTax software for the desktop CD/Download editions for 2019 should be available in mid-November of 2019. The TurboTax web based online editions for 2019 should be available sometime in December of 2019.
The desktop software and the online software is basically the same software so how fast or slow is based on either your internet speed or the processor and amount of memory on your personal computer.
You can access the online editions with a Windows 7 based computer.
Since Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows 7 in January of 2020, TurboTax will not support the TurboTax 2019 software installed on a Windows 7 personal computer.
