Can you clarify which state you are filing in?
The state is Maryland.
my source died in July 2022 I specified that on the federal return. When the state return was created it appears that since my wife was indicated as deceased on the Federal, the state did not count her exemption. Although it did count the extra 1,000 dollars for being over 65.
I deleted the state return, went back to federal and removed the deceased indicator and rebuilt the state return. It still did not count the 3,200 exemption for my spouse.
id hate to have to delete everything and start from scratch again so I hope there is an easier way to fix this. Thanks
It's possible that what you're seeing is an exemption limitation based on income.
For example, if you're married filing joint and your federal adjusted gross income was over $150,000 but not over $175,000, each of your exemption amounts would drop to $1,600, equaling the total exemption amount you're seeing.
And, in that scenario, your spouse would still be getting the $1,000 age exemption, since that wouldn't be affected by the reduction.
Please see Exemption Amount Chart (10A) and 10 Exemptions in the Maryland State and Local Tax Forms and Instructions, available on Maryland's 2022 Individual Income Tax Forms page.
If this isn't the case, please post back.
You are correct. The AGI was above 150,000. First time I’ve seen that situation.
thank You
