What to do with D20 on line 12 on my W2?

Please clarify your question.

Code D in Box 12 on the W-2 is:

D — Elective deferral under a 401(k) cash or arrangement plan. This includes a SIMPLE 401(k) arrangement.

If that is the case, Box 1 (Wages) of the W-2 will be less than Box 5 (Medicare Wages) by that amount because Box 1 took advantage of the 401-K deduction.

There is not a number designation like (20) associated with Box 12.  If This is not a 401-k contribution.  I suggest you contact your employer for clarification.

No...Just ignore the "20"

The "20" just refers to a makeup contribution for a 2020 , but made in 2021   , thus, the "20"

As @dmertz  has noted in another post  (though no AA20 in your case):

"The 20 after the D and after the AA indicates a contribution made in 2021 as a make-up contribution for 2020 under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994."

AA20 is a similar make-up contribution made for 2020 under USERRA but to a designated Roth account instead of to the traditional account in the (TSP) plan.

Agreed ... IGNORE the "20" ... just enter it as a simple code D.

I have the same thing on W-2, but have one line with sum next to D, and then second line  with D 20 and different sum... not sure what to do?

You will need to contact your employer to find out why there are two code D's on your W-2.  The one with the code D 20 is not valid as it appears to be indicating tax year 2020 for the amount.

On a 2021 W-2, code D by itself on a represents your elective deferrals for 2021.  The code D20 indicates your make-up contributions for 2020 under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).

Do I just add the D20 and D line together to submit in turbotax? I was on AD so could have something to do with my USERRA.

Do not add the two amounts together.  Each Code D is entered separately as shown on your W-2

IRS W-2 Instructions - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw2w3.pdf

If any elective deferrals, salary reduction amounts, or nonelective contributions under a section 457(b) plan during the year are make-up amounts under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA) for a prior year, you must enter the prior year contributions separately. Beginning with the earliest year, enter the code, the year, and the amount. For example, elective deferrals of $2,250 for 2020 and $1,250 for 2021 under USERRA under a section 401(k) plan are reported in box 12 as follows.

D 20 2250.00, D 21 1250.00. A 2022 contribution of $7,000 does not require a year designation; enter it as D 7000.00. Report the code (and year for prior year USERRA contributions) to the left of the vertical line in boxes 12a through 12d.

When I enter them separately, Turbotax says the following:

We need to fix an error with box 12
Here's what to do:
  • Check the following entries against your W-2 and delete the duplicate box 12 code(s) using the trash icon.
  • Make sure the amount next to each remaining code matches your W-2.

The two amounts for D20 and D, when added together, matches the total amount on my last Leave and Earning statement for 2021, which is why it seems like I should add them together since Turbotax find it as an error when they are entered on two separate D lines.

Since the program errors out with the two code D's then combine the amounts on one line with a Code D.

I have the same problem. The line that has $56.20 should be coded D20.

Should I add the two D lines or ignore D20 on my W-2?

Ignore the D20

What to do with D20 on line 12 on my W2?

AGREED ... ignore the D20 since that really belongs on the 2020 return not the 2021.   Do not add the 2 code d amounts together or you will get an error code for putting in too much 401K contributions.
