E-filing the tax return closes after 11:59pm local time on October 15, 2021.
You have until midnight in YOUR OWN time zone on October 15 to e-file. If your e-file is rejected there will be several more days to fix it and re-file, but you cannot try for the first time after midnight tonight. If you miss the e-file deadline you will have to print sign and mail your return. Any changes you need to make will require the use of the downloaded CD/download software since online software will shut down.
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO FILE ... IF FOR ANY REASON THE IRS CANNOT OR DOESN'T ACCEPT THE RETURN ON TIME IT WILL BE CONSIDERED LATE. There is often a backlog the last hour and sometimes the IRS doesn't drain the pool in time. Of course Murphy's Law comes into play as well and either your computer will have an issue or an error that you cannot fix or the TT server's have issues.
That said ... if you have a refund today's deadline is immaterial since you have 3 years to file a return with a refund on it. However, if you don't file today you will need to mail in the return after tonight.
perhaps you had same extremely frustrating and poorly explained issue with e filing, as i did late at night between 14 and 15 october. I spent over six hours desperately trying to e file from turbotax desktop federal and two state returns, Firstly ideally you file state and federal together as they only tell you after filing federal (which eventually worked) that state can only be filed after federal "accepted" which took a few hours. Then there was a message that the payment center (one has to pay $25 for second state) closes from Oct 15 to prepare for next tax season- outrageous when considering deadline is midnight on Oct 15... and they provide a phone number to pay by telephone and credit card that is only open certain hours- and this was now between 1am and 6 am NY time. Anyway eventually one (free) state went through leaving me exhausted at 6 am local time and prepared to call the number or post by main (NY- not allowed really) today. But i just tried again on line and this time my payment of $25 for NJ state went through and I got a "your NJ return has been e filed" message-- wonderful-- after literally 8-12 hours trying and an entire night up without sleep. Additionally I could only e file Federal after begrudgingly making a so called " correction" or rather undoing an over ride change i had made on form 1116, that made my refund $100 smaller.
For future reference, you don't have to meet the deadline, Apr or Oct, if you are due a refund.
In any case, a last minute glitch is not worth losing an entire night's sleep.
I just submitted my federal efile. I couldn't get it to go last night, and this was because I was trying to efile both the state and federal and I hadn't paid for the state, therefore, it wasn't letting me finish the efile of federal. I contacted turbo tax this morning and spoke with a representative WILLIAM and he walked me through the state payment process and then I was able to efile my federal. It was too late to efile the WV state, but that was okay with me. So don't panic, you can still efile your federal until the 20th! Goodluck
