As I understand it, you won’t be able to run 2025 desktop TurboTax on Windows 10.

If your computer does not meet the system requirements for desktop download TurboTax, you can still use online TurboTax with any computer or mobile device that has internet access.

Well yeah, that's what I read and I'm pissed about it because I do not want Win 11 and do not want to buy a new computer so I can run TT.  I'm now seriously considering just using a tax prep service and dumping TT whom I have used for 20+ years.

Why the hell don't they tell you that when they tell you that you have to migrate to Win 11?

If you want to switch to the Online version next year here is some info……

If you used the Desktop program for 2024 here’s How to transfer into the Online version, expand the blue link if you used the CD/download last year

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/entering-importing/help/how-do-i-transfer-last-year-s-return-into-...

If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version.  It has less features and no Forms Mode.  You can only do 1 return.  Federal and state are separate fees.

Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2025 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done.  In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something.  You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.

Inutuit should offer TT '25 desktop for Win10 with ESU.

Intuit is wrong when they state in their email sent today, "Microsoft will no longer provide ... security fixes for Windows 10 operating system. Because security is a top priority for us, TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025 onwards will not be compatible with Windows 10 operating system."

In fact MS's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Win10 "provides access to critical and important security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) for devices running Windows 10, version 22H2." (support dot microsoft dot com/en-us/windows/windows-10-consumer-extended-security-updates-esu-program-33e17de9-36b3-43bb-874d-6c53d2e4bf42)

"You can enroll in ESU by one of the following three ways:

  • At no additional cost if you are syncing your PC Settings

  • Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points

  • One-time purchase of $30 USD or local currency equivalent plus applicable tax

All enrollment options provide extended security updates through October 13, 2026."

I ran TT desktop on Win10 for '24 and should be allowed to again for '25.

I too ran TT2024 on a Win10 sys; I did finally get to a real TT person today who said it's still early and things can change, also you can use the online TT version and use any computer with internet to use it.  I made my feelings known to the TT guy plus on the following survey.  If enough customers raise hell I do believe they'll back off.  I'm not buying another computer or updating my 10 sys to 11.  Several years ago they did this same crap and I bought a new computer with Win 10 so I could use TT's software, not again!

Intuit also needs to realize that 43% of the US still uses Windows 10, and that 90% of the US doesn't have the money to upgrade their computers to be windows 11 compatible.

What their IT department needs to do is work with Microsoft and their paid for security updates, and get 2025 to work with windows 10.     Listen IT people and forum mods, here's what will happen, most people want a desktop version for security reasons.   Telling 43% of your userbase that you are going to discontinue something is not financially sound.   It gives competitors a chance to gain a one up on you.

for windows using online OS 8.1 and 10 required. for desktop no one can say if Intuit will change its mind if enough users abandon it.  I think it's gambling desktop users will switch to online. we also have to see what other desktop apps will do for the 2025 tax year.
