What is hell is intuit doing telling me I have to upgrade to Win 11, I don't want that POS, they said it's for security, That's OK, i'll take my chances with Win 10.

Bigger picture - desktop thru July 2025 had 4.3mil users declining 4% annually vs. 35mil online 'units' (which may be multiple returns per user), declining 1% annually in total but growing 6% in what they call "higher average revenue per return (ARPR) filers"

https://investors.intuit.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1266/intuit-reports-strong-fourth-qua...

Intuit care about growing the high revenue 35mil, not sustaining the low revenue 4mil.

Win10 share of Windows in the US is steadily declining monthly, down to 35.6% as of end Sep, likely lower within the Turbo user base as most folks would be pushed by this decision to upgrade sooner than later and move on.  Intuit likely has stats and projections on this and we're ok with the expected user loss which will be far lower by Jan/Feb.

Absolutely agree their agenda is to push people to online and then upsell other services.  They've also been lobbying hard to kill IRS Direct File and want to capture that.  We'll see in a year where all the churn lands.

I will tell everyone this:  if TurboTax doesn't allow their 2025 release to be installed on Windows 10, I will switch to H&R Block.  And keep in mind I've been a user of TurboTax for more than 25 years.

I simply refuse to upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11.  Especially since that upgrade can't happen on my family PC without changing hardware.   The easy solution is to move away from any software that "forces" a Win 11 upgrade.  So I guess it's goodbye TurboTax, hello H&R Block.

To the good folks at TurboTax, I hope you're reading this!!

I'm so pissed off about this too.  Just bought a win 11 pro license and it's telling me I cannot update from win 11 home to win 11 pro direct.  Need to do a completely clean install.  Dude, i am 50.  I don't have the same amount of time I did when i was 15 doing complete reformats, reinstalling every single software. Why are you deliberately making my life difficult? Are you trying to DRIVE US AWAY FROM TURBOTAX?

I'm going to have to reinstall all my old turbotaxes to access my old tax forms.  And Lord knows if I'll even be able to download old turbotax versions.

This is intentional: they want us to migrate to online so they can own our data and hold it hostage unless we pay them an annual subscription fee.

@JWL2672a if you had to get a new machine or had to reformat the old one and re-install s/w, you may not be able to reactivate old versions of Turbo for 2019-2020 and shortly 2021 will drop off when 2025 is released - Intuit supports activation of current tax year and 3 prior years.  Turbo prior to 2019 didn't use this new license activation server so can probably be re-installed.

You shouldn't have to re-install windows to get from Win 11 home to Win 11 Pro.  You simply have to put the new Pro Activation Key onto your system. Link below on how to enter the new key.

I just cancelled my subscription to prevent them from charging me for TT 2025.  No way I'm using Windows 11 or their stupid online version.  The TurboTax website is a horrifying mess as it is.  I have TT installers going all the way back to 2003. Intuit can take their forced microsoft crap and shove it.

I wonder how many of these it will take to get TT to do the right thing and NOT require Win 11?

Hi Valued Customer,

We're reaching out with this important follow-up notice regarding the end of support from Microsoft for Windows 10 and its impact on TurboTax Desktop software. TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025 and beyond won't be compatible with devices using Windows 10, including those with an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program purchased from Microsoft.

To use TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025, your computer will need to run on Microsoft Windows 11 operating system. If you don’t plan on upgrading to Windows 11, we recommend using TurboTax Online, which will work on any supported web browser. Later in the year, we’ll be sending you some discount offers you can use for any eligible TurboTax Online product for tax year 2025.

If you have a Mac computer, your computer will need to run on macOS Sonoma 14 operating system (or later).

For more resources and additional information about this change, please refer to the help article: How does the end of support for Windows 10 affect my TurboTax Desktop experience?

To help us understand your plans for the 2025 tax season, please select the option that most closely matches your next step:

I already upgraded to Windows 11
I haven't upgraded to Windows 11 yet but plan to
I will use TurboTax Online
I’ll look for another Windows 10 desktop software
I will have a tax professional prepare my taxes for me
Don't know/other

Thanks for being a part of the TurboTax family.

Warm regards,

The TurboTax Team

I just got a survey from TT asking me what I will do in response to the Win 11 requirement. One of the options  (which I selected) was, "look for another tax program."

If they get enough responses like mine, maybe they'll back off.

Exactly.  I filled out the survey with “I’m ditching TurboTax. “

I truly am.  Not going to mess around with my perfectly fine computer.  I hate being forced to “upgrade.”

I never upgrade my iPhone iOS because it absolutely does slow your phone and drain your battery.’ No upside at all.  I hate being forced to do it by apps that require it.

Agreed. Windows 11 is supposed to be a security update, but it has the most un-secure features that I will not use. So did Microsoft make a deal with Intuit??

1. I do not want my personal files moved to Windows system servers for supposed safe keeping. More likely to use their AI and come up with more BS.

2. Windows 11 forces all their AI tools.

3. Forced Windows account.

4. Etc.

To bypass all the hardware requirements and minimize problems with Windows 11, you have to use a tool like "rufus", but even so, you're still stuck with Microsoft.

I cancelled my subscription. I'd rather do my taxes on paper before I go to Windows 11. I'll be moving to Linux.

This is not for security, it is for Microsoft's benefit.

I may need to switch to HnR Block software for 2025 that still will work with Windows 10.
Poor decision by Intuit to not support Windows 10 for at least 1 to 2 years more.

I do not want to switch to the on-line version. I have been using TT for over 25-30 years. Will switch to other 2025 tax software supporting Windows 10.

a few days ago, I received another notification from Intuit that W11 will be needed for 2025 desktop users.  what other desktop vendors will do for 2025 and in the future is unknown.
