What is 2017 Form 1040-ES Payment Voucher?

First-time filer with Turbo Tax (first time filer ever).  I understand entire return other than the first four (4) '2017 Form 1040-ES Payment Voucher' 1-4; $1,890.00 each.  Why did these print with my Federal return?  Am I required to pay these in 2017?  If so, why?  I never paid estimated taxes before.  Makes no sense.  Please advise.  Brian W. What is 2017 Form 1040-ES Payment Voucher?

The program produces these forms as a convenience for you to make the estimated tax payments.  You are not locked into those payments.  The program will produce them automatically if you owed tax as the government requires you to withhold enough tax to cover your tax liability or make estimated tax payments.  If you don't have enough withholding and you don't make estimated tax payments, then the IRS can charge you with an underpayment penalty.

However, that is an awful lot of money for estimated payments for a first time filer.  Do you remember maybe going through the estimated tax section of the program and telling the program you were going to make more money in 2017?  Regardless, you can ignore the estimated payment forms and throw them in trash if you feel that is not in line with any tax you would owe (or you can make smaller payments).

If you owed tax this year because of a one-time event and you won't owe next year, then you can decline to send any payments.  You can also decline to send the payments even if you will owe tax next year, but you may be assessed an underpayment penalty.  You can view more information about this penalty at the link below.
