The entry of an EIN is not required for reporting bank interest. Are you sure you are reporting it in the right place?
This is the correct way to enter bank interest:
It is not required, but this year TurboTax is making you enter one. I have been successful with 12-3456789
TurboTax does not require an Employee Tax Identification Number to report interest RECEIVED, only interest PAID.
Please delete that 1099-INT and enter as Interest under INCOME.
It will not pass review this year without an EIN for interest received. That started around January of this year. If there is a workaround please let me know. I have been making up fake EIN's to get it to file.
@DanP0428 , please follow the steps which @JulieS , stated above. It is very important to click on the "I'll type it in myself" option so that you are not asked for the EIN. Please refer to the images below for further reference. As you can see in the third image, it should not ask you for the EIN Number.
I do use type it in myself. The screenshot I posted is from the Review error, not from the input screen. You have to Review to see the error message and you have to correct it to continute.
How would you put in a 1099-INT any other way? You can't import it if there is no EIN. Use your brain and think about how silly and wrong your advice is. Go through the entire process in TurboTax before you post something is working that is not working. This actually needs an investigation.
It comes up needs review and then you have to make up an EIN if your 1099-INT does not have one. This started this tax season. It has happened with several different people that I assisted with their TurboTax this year. You can enter the information, but not file without an EIN on a 1099-INT.
I have tested this myself and I just retested it again and I am not asked for an EIN for interest in Review or anywhere else except the import screen.
Maybe you have an incomplete entry that you tried to import.
Try this:
Thank you! This worked.
It does require an EIN. Without that, it wouldn't let me E-file.
same forme me. I remove every 1099-INT. Do a Federal review.
And when I come back to enter a form 1099-INT, there still asking for Federal Identification Number (FEIN).
Did you check that link before posting it. I suggest you do and remove that link,.
This is still a problem three years later.
Leave the Tax ID number field blank and ignore the prompt to supply it, as it is not a requirement for reporting interest.
