Will i still get my federal return if i owe 185? New to turbotax
Overpayment means you have paid more taxes in (withholding) than you owed for taxes for the year. The overpayment will be refunded to you.
Yes, you will get your federal refund. The IRS and your state tax agency are two different entities. If you have a federal refund you will get that once the IRS processes your tax return.
If you owe the state taxing agency, that amount is due by 15 Apr to the state and is to be paid by you separately.
@npabarroo19 What do you owe $185 for? Turbo Tax fees, Federal tax due or state tax due or for a prior year? If you have a tax due you are not getting a refund.
Thank you
I "wont"get my refund? I owe 185 for Massachusetts state tax but it said it would be deducted from federal
You can't apply your federal refund to pay off your state taxes due, nor the other way around. These are two separate taxing authorities. Please see this for more information: Can I pay my state taxes from my federal refund?
No, you misunderstood. That's not possible. You might have had the Turbo Tax fees deducted from your refund.
The state tax can not be deducted from the federal refund. NEVER. You can only have the Turbo Tax fees deducted. You will still get the full federal refund minus any fees you had deducted. Turbo Tax just shows you a screen at the end showing the Net amount of federal and state combined. But it is just for your own info. You do still have to pay the state yourself separately. See,
Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the state cover sheet with the Turbotax logo. If you owed tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay. Read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps.
Your only proof of payment is your bank statement or credit card showing the payment coming out. Turbo Tax only passes your bank account number to the state for the state to take it out of your account. But most states do not let you pay by Direct Debit so you have to mail in a check or go directly to the state's website to pay.
Okay, So basically im still getting my federal return, correct?
Yes you will get the full federal refund minus any fees. You need to pay the state tax due 185.
