You have exempt interest dividends that might be exempt in your state. Follow these steps to determine your state amount:
- You need to look at the many pages of attached paperwork.
- Find the exempt interest dividends section.
- Then look at the states that created the dividends.
- Is your state in the list?
- Find the percentage for your state
- Multiply the percentage times your total in box 11
- This is your state exempt amount
If your state is not on the list, you have none from your state. You only care about the states where you file taxes.
Follow these steps to enter your exempt amount:
- After entering the 12 boxes of the 1099-B,
- continue
- none of the above
- continue
- Select / enter your state and maybe the amount
- Programs vary - you may need to select I earned dividends in more than one state
- then scroll to the bottom and select more than one state
- enter the money earned in all the other states - the total minus your state amount
- enter your state and amount
- Done
