What year is "this year"?

Your marital status that applies to the tax year is what you were on the last day of the year.     For 2019 tax return, if not married as of Dec 31, 2019 then you were single.   For 2020 tax return, if marred as of Dec 31 2020 then you file married.

If you are preparing a 2019 tax return then it seems you were Single in 2019.  You cannot file married until 2020---the year in which you became legally married.  In early 2021 you can file a joint 2020 return.
