W-2 not yet received

Hi,

First, I welcome and appreciate your feedback and support. Second, the issue I need help with is that I have not yet received my W-2. I am currently abroad on a trip and outside of the U.S. However, I had informed my employer (hiring manager) that I needed to have my W-2 mailed to a new address abroad. Only after leaving the U.S. he informed me that the corporate office mails out the W-2 and they could only mail it to to a U.S. address. After giving him an address of a friend in Texas they proceeded to mail it to her. Unfortunately, the letter was returned to the Corporate office as not deliverable.

After reaching out to the hiring manager he told me that this year there was online access to retrieve the W-2. I then tried to get it online and could not because the company providing access to the W-2 automatically enrolled me in Two-step verification and I no longer had access to the U.S. number so I could not get the W-2. The other solution the hiring manager offered me was to re-mail the W-2 to my brother's address. However, that's been about two weeks ago since it was supposedly re-mailed and my brother states he has not yet received it.

This W-2 details the main bulk of my income for 2021 so it's important. At this point I will not wait any longer but will proceed with filing. What options do I have to for file without this W-2? I greatly appreciate your assistance, thank you.

Best wishes,

Hannah.

You need to report all your income or else there will be penalties & interest assessed by the IRS. Since your employer has already send a copy of your W-2 to the IRS, when you file your return, there will be a mismatch of data which can lead to interest and penalties.

There are multiple options here:

1) Contact the IRS. Please visit IRS - W2 Information on steps to contact the IRS.

2) If the IRS is unable to help, then you will need to Fill out Form 4852, which is a substitute for Form W-2 if you have not received it. You can fill this form in TurboTax. However, the IRS doesn't allow Form 4852 to be filed electronically, so you will need to mail it to the IRS.

3) You can file an extension to give you extra time to receive your W-2. Please visit File Extension to get started on filing the extension through TurboTax. Keep in mind that you still need to pay any taxes due by the tax deadline, so an extension to file is not an extension of time to pay any taxes you may owe. So if there is any taxes due, you will still need to pay them before the filing deadline or the IRS will add interest and penalties.

Please visit What To Do If You Haven't Received a W-2 for more information.
