I filed my tax return on 2/26/2026, I had 2 W-2s on it (separate jobs), and got my return which was very small.
Today, 4/30/26, after having received my refund, I got another copy c W-2 from one employer in the mail dated 2/22/26 on the envelope. Same company as one that was already filed, accepted received, but the total wages is higher than the one that was filed.
I looked back in my downloads, and this same one had been saved in my phone from 12/29/2025.
Did I file the wrong copy c? Can I and how do I amend this? Will I be in legal trouble for filing the wrong one?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you entered a number that was on the regular W-2 instead of the W-2c, then yes, you probably entered the wrong amount and need to amend your return. To amend your return, you will simply log back into your account and click Amend My Return. If you used the desktop version, you can just open the program and click Amend My Return. You will see all of your numbers go to $0. Then you will select that you need to Amend the income section and your W-2. Make the changes and continue through. It is possible that you will see an amount due since you have more income, unless you also had more taxes withheld. If you do have an amount due, it is basically repaying the extra amount of refund that you got back and possibly some extra depending on how much of a difference in income and how much your original refund was.
No, you are generally not in legal trouble when it is an accident. However, you do need to fix it as the longer it goes, if you owe, the more penalties and interest that you may incur.
Deleted...Sorry...misread some information.
Neither was labeled “W-2c” for changed, they were both “W-2, Copy C”. The name of the company was slightly different, employer ID different, wages and withheld values were different than the initial. I called an expert earlier and as neither was a W-2c, we amended and added it as just a new one since so much was different.
The financial data on Copy C SHOULD be the same as the other copies. When you said you had different numbers I assumed you were talking about a corrected copy. However, if they were all together, with different numbers on the different copies, it would be a good idea to contact your employer to verify which numbers were correct. You could also look at your last pay stub to see which numbers matched your pay stubs.
