Hi everyone,
I have used TurboTax for the past 10 years without any issues, and this is my first time here to ask for help/advice. I would like to see if anyone has similar experience like mine - the number never entered shown on you tax return? If anyone has similar experience, how do you get help from TurboTax? Thanks ahead.
The details as follows:
I received CP23 from IRS after I filed my tax, which states my total payments and credits should be $7,000 less than what I reported on 1040. After I looked into 1040 & all the forms, I found out that $7,000 is from line 10 on Schedule 3 - "Amount paid with request for extension to file." However, I don't recall I've ever entered $7,000 while doing my tax earlier.
Attach 1- Schedule 3 line 10
First I filed Accurate Guarantee Claim to TurboTax, and the reply mentions:
-You e-filed an application for an extension to file your 2021 return, Form 4868, on March 23, 2022. The form as filed showed no balance due. There is no information in the e-file record regarding a payment with the extension.
-The data source of the $7,000 payment to be made with an extension is the extension form, indicating that the information on the Form 4868 was changed before it was e-filed.
After I looked into all the pages of Turbotax, it took me 20 minutes before finally locating the page to enter the amount paid with extension. That's because 2021 is my first year to file extension. It is under the section of "Income taxes paid." As the screenshot shows, I'd never visited this section because the tab shows "Start", rather than "Revisit." The same thing applies to "Payments with 2021 federal extension."
Attach 2- Income taxes paid
Attach 3- Payment with extension
After clicking into "Payments with 2021 federal extension," now I found the culprit - $7,000.
Attach 4- Unentered $7,000
Since I've never visited any of those sections or entered any numbers on it, how did this $7,000 end up showing on my tax return? I am wondering if there is any technical issue with the software this year? Or it got hacked?
I've done my tax with TurboTax for the past 10 years, and it always gives me the peace of mind. However, the experience this year definitely undermines my trust in this brand unless the company can provide a reasonable explanation. Thanks again for reading my long tax story. Any thoughts are appreciated!

You are going to have to contact Support to get a definitive and official response.
See What is the TurboTax phone number? (intuit.com)
You should note, glitch or not, that the Accuracy Guarantee covers penalties and interest and not any tax that may be due.
The screen that you found under "Payments with 2021 federal extension" is not the only place where you can enter the amount paid with the extension. When you filed the extension with TurboTax it asked for several amounts, one of which was the amount you were paying with the extension. It's possible that you entered the $7,000 there. It would then also show up under "Payments with 2021 federal extension," even though you never visited that page.
FYI ... in the future ... before you file sleep on it then come back later and review the return again in full before you click that big orange file now button. Anyone making enough to have that much in excess SS taxes paid is smart enough that if you had looked at that return the $7000 amount should have looked really wrong.
To rjs,
In my case, the reply from TurboTax Accurate Guarantee Claim mentions "There is no information in the e-file record regarding a payment with the extension." And I don't recall I've done anything like this while I filed the extension.
Anyhow, thanks for bringing this up that I can learn something new. Appreciate it.
To Critter-3,
I've used TurboTax for the past 10 years without any issues. Definitely this is a painful lesson.
The problem is this $7,000 is on Schedule 3 line 10, which is even not shown on 1040 at all. With so many numbers on all the tax forms/schedules, it's almost impossible to verify all of them by ourselves. And that's also the reason we use tax software, right?

It's true that it does not appear as a separate item on Form 1040, but it's included in the totals on Form 1040 lines 31, 32, and 33, all of which are $7,000 higher than they should be.
this could come from the tax payment worksheet. could you have entered an estimate payment as an extension payment?
@Mike9241 The OP is using TurboTax Online. She has no access to the worksheets.
