I work in Taiwan, and it is my first time filing.
Does Turbotax allow me to file after 18th April (U.S. citizen residing overseas an automatic 2-month extension of rules)?

You do get an automatic extension of time to file your taxes - two months to June 15 - but your tax payments are still due on April 18th with all of us still over here.

That shouldn't cause you too much consternation, though, if you are going to be over in Taiwan for a full year.  You get an exclusion of over a hundred thousand from your income as well as a credit for any foreign taxes that you pay.

TurboTax can help with all of the filing you need to do for this including your foreign earned income exclusion.

Here's a bunch more info about filing taxes while overseas.

Thank you for your answer.
I still have some questions.
In my case, I  have to upload form 2555, form 1040, form1118 and form W2.
1. Using the TurboTax, I choose “I have a job” does this option include those forms I mentioned?
2. Using the TurboTax after April 18th to file my taxes, I will get the fine to pay the taxes, including the past didn’t file part?

First enter your foreign income.

Here's how to enter your foreign income:

  1. Sign in to your account and open or continue your return.
  2. Search for foreign income.
  3. Select the Jump to link in the search results.
  4. Answer Yes to Did You Make Any Money Outside the United States? and follow the on-screen instructions.

Form 2555 (Foreign Earned Income Exclusion) calculates the amount of foreign earned income and/or foreign housing you can exclude from taxation.

Form 1116 is to claim the foreign tax credit if you are an individual, estate, or trust, and you paid or accrued certain foreign taxes to a foreign country or U.S. possession

Please check the link below to enter Form 1116 or the deduction for 2021:

Where do I enter the foreign tax credit (Form 1116) or deduction for 2021?

If you get the extension to file, you don't pay penalty but you still have to pay taxes and interest. However, there is penalty for not filing prior year returns. There is usually no penalty for failure to file if your tax return results in a refund.

How should I start filing for the first time?

I work and live in Taiwan.

1. Dose the TurboTax allow me to file after 18th April?

Because in Taiwan submit 2021 tax is in May 2022.
or I should still be filing before April 18th, but I only had info about tax in 2019.

2. Where can I find form 2555, form 1040 and form1118?

I clicked “Your tax returns & documents”, but nothing showed.

Yes, TurboTax will allow you to file your return past April 18th.  You can e-file your 2021 return using TurboTax up until around the end of October.  After that, you would need to print and mail your return.

Since you live overseas, you are given an automatic 2 month extension to file your return, which would allow you to wait to file until June 18th, 2022.  However this does NOT give you an extension on time to pay.  If you do not pay any taxes you may owe by April 18th, you would be charged interest from April 18th until you file your return.

To fill out forms 2555 and 1118 you will select the following:

  • Federal
  • Income
  • Show More next to Less Common Income
  • Start next to Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion.

You can also click the search box in the upper right hand corner and type in the form name.
