two state income

I worked and lived in CA for about 3 months and then moved and worked in KY the rest of the year. I only made 5,464 in CA, must I still file CA state taxes if I file Single with no dependents.

two state income

Hi,

Sounds like you were a resident of California for part of 2022 and a resident of Kentucky for the rest of the year.  That would make you a California part-year resident, and you would need to file a California part-year resident return.  As a part-year resident you pay tax on:

  • All worldwide income received while a California resident (including your 401K distribution)
  • Income from California sources while you were a nonresident

Here is some information from the CA FTB that also has some scenarios that may be helpful to you.

Sorry, I know that's not what you were hoping to hear, but my goal is to keep you on the right side of the CA FTB.

Please cheer below if this is helpful!

Best,

Karen
