Picking update causes a spinning icon and "Please wait...", but it never offers a way to enter the SSA-1099 information. In forms mode, the form is blank except that the SS benefits received is 2023 is checked. Clearly this is a program defect that should be fixed with an update.

Windows or MAC?

Works OK for me on Windows 11
IF you are on a Windows computer, and you have already run your software updates?
Try downloading and installing the Manual Update (takes time to run, be patient).
Manually Update TurboTax for Windows Software
Windows 11 - all online update installed
The manual "super patch" did not fix the issue.
I fixed the problem. There were zeros in 3 places on the form. I deleted those zeros and now it brings up the dialog to enter the details from SSA-1099. Those zeros (0) were perhaps because it imported data from last years TT. Probably deleting the form would accomplish the same thing.
I'm comfortable with forms mode, but this is too complicated for many possible users and still needs to be fixed.
Removed...(Sorry, wrong conversation)
Usually, a zero pre-filled in a field indicates you had a "Supporting Details" (SD) sheet attached to that field in the prior year.
Usually, double-clicking on the zero brings up the SD sheet. and you either enter your data there...or delete the SD sheet entirely, and you get full access to that field in the main screen again for this and future years (unless you use the SD sheet again sometime).
Yes I did use a supporting details form last year because I had 2 SSA-1099 forms and I totaled them in the details form. Now I'm even more convinced this is program defect. The process that carries over last year's data should not make it impossible to enter data this year. That is a bad design.
3/3/2025 : problem with '0's being pre-populated still exists. Agree that this is a 'bug' in the software and should be fixed. After 30min searching for a solution, finally found this message and going to the social security form and deleting the '0's worked. Too complicated. Right now - I would not recommend this tax program!
Other users who experienced this and similar issues with entering Social Security for 2024 found that the following workarounds resolved it:
- If you transferred 2023 Social Security information to your 2024 return: try deleting the Social Security form that transferred over. Look for Social Sec in the list of Forms in Forms Mode, open it and click on Delete Form at the bottom.
- If you have a supporting details entry for Box 5 of Line A: Remove the supporting details sheet and return to Step by Step, and the interview process goes forward as normal.
I have been able to enter Social Security in step-by-step on my Mac where I don't have a prior year transfer with Social Security.
The issue has already been reported for further investigation.
I am having the same problem except now I cannot get the form to delete. Any ideas?
IF you delete it ..it may regenerate automatically.
I "think" the SD sheet will not regenerate though...but if it does and still blocks the interview?
Switch to Forms Mode, and just enter your SS data into lines A,B,C,D,E (Wahtever data is on your actual SSA-1099) on the SS Benefits worksheet. (The text on that forms worksheet tells you what to enter.
IF any of those lines does happen to have an SD worksheet attached, you will know immediately when you try to enter some $$ on that line. IF you delete the SD worksheet at that time, you won't be tasked with finding it again (Unless you really do want the SD worksheet)
