Question

Turbotax 8801 line 2

I think I found a bug in TurboTax Premier 2019: the form 8801 line 2 included the AMT I paid in 2018 (the line 11 of 2018 form 6251), which is not correct. Here is the 8801 instruction:

How can we report this bug to intuit? It needs to be fixed ASAP!

I believe I have hit the same issue. I've just started trying to contact turbotax support. I'll reply with what I hear back and would love to hear from others that  have hit the issue.

It is not clear to me exactly what turbotax is putting in line 2, but it definitely seems wrong and, in my case, is resulting in the wrong AMT credit carry forward.

When I manually fill out a form 8801 fixing this line, I see the numbers I expect. I'm not sure how this helps me with using turbotax though.

Looking forward to hearing what we should do to resolve this.

I just got off the phone with customer support. I have reported the issue and mentioned this post. No confirmation yet that it is a real issue or word on when we might hear back. The woman I spoke to suggested I call back tomorrow. I'll do so, and will report back.

I used TurboTax Deluxe, noticed the same issue.  Thanks for the heads up! I already e-filed 2019 tax return.  Like to know how soon the fix be available so that amended return can be filed.

    An update:

I called back today, and after getting through the various phone tree and supporter layers, I got hooked up with product support. The woman I spoke to was very nice and quite useful. She indicated that the potential issue has been raised in their internal systems and was being investigated. She attached my case to it and said I'd be contacted when there was an update. She said to get back in touch in 7 - 10 business days if I had not heard back.

I'll report back when I have heard back or if I reach out again.

My returns got rejected because of this bug. Turbo tax says they are in the process of updating form 8801 and will be fixed after March 5th, at which time I need to re-submit my tax returns. I hope I don't have to pay the $19.99 again for the state e-file.

I also got an email that my support case was resolved this weekend. I called support this morning, and they confirmed that there was an underlying issue with the product that had been reported by a number of users.

They did not have a firm fix by date for me, though it sounded like there would be a fix. They mentioned they were aiming for March 6th, but I'm not sure if that's an internal goal or a real date at which the product would be updated. I said I'd wait until then and call back if I had not seen the fix live or heard back.

The corrected Form 8801 is expected to be release later today (Release 20). You need to check on it this weekend.

You should delete the form in your return. When a corrected form is updated it is possible for some old calculations is still in the form. Deleting the form will allow only the corrected form to be loaded.

To delete a form off of your return you need to:

    1. Select Tax Forms in the Black bar on the left side of the screen.
    2. Select Tools from the drop down menu.
    3. On the Tools Center Select Delete a form.
    4. Locate the form on the list and select Delete.
    5. You will be asked to confirm the deletion.

I initially did my taxes a week ago and got a different result when I updated software today.  I made no changes to my entries.  Looking at the numbers on the forms, I got the same result on Line 24 in both instances but a blank space on Line 25 in one scenario.  Is this the correct one?

After deleting the form.  Try going back into the "Other Tax Situations" tab and "Start" the AMT topic interview. That should regenerate the form.

So I'd like to report another bug on Form 8801 that popped up for my 2022 return.  The Part III section wasn't filling out at all, even though I reported capital gain, resulting in a lower credit carryforward for 2023.  Eventually I moved from the online to the desktop version to try and manually update the field, and found that I could get the form to behave correctly by adding a '0' in the embedded worksheet for 2021 Form 2555 (as shown on line 2a here).

This isn't something you can do in the online version.  I figure the logic on line 11 wasn't operating correctly - those values from Form 2555 don't exist for me as I never filed that form, but TurboTax was looking for a value.

For my 2021 return I also had the bug reported elsewhere where line 28 wasn't populating.  I tried to refile that return with the fix in place with the 2021 TurboTax, and that had the same issue where Part III wasn't populating.  I ended up manually amending that return as I don't have the desktop version for 2021 (I had to sweet talk support to get the 2022 version so I could file my tax).

Hopefully this is helpful for someone, and hopefully that someone has the ability to fix the code for the rest of us 🙂
