If you set your return up correctly as a joint return in My Info---then every income entry screen has a spot with each spouse's name. Check to make sure that in My Info you said YES to you want to file together with your spouse, and that you entered her information in My Info.
Then check the income screens---such as Federal>Wages & Income---for a spot to enter her W-2. If she has Social Security---there will also be a spot with her name, etc.
I see no such place to enter spouse data. Return was started with "Married Filing Separately", and after changing to "Married Filing Jointly" and entering in spouse including SSN, there is nowhere to download tax information for the spouse anywhere in the forms.
Okay---you may have errors in My Info. You did something to change your filing status---we do not know what you did. Go back to My Info. Click your name. Go back through all the screens in My Info. When it asks if you were married in 2023 say YES. Next it will ask if you want to file together with your spouse. Say YES. Then it is going to prompt you to enter the information for your spouse. Enter her name, date of birth, SSN, etc. If you have the return set up correctly as a joint return, every income screen will provide spots by name for your incomes to be entered.
I walked through the entire Personal Info for both people again, making sure that:
1. All my info was correct.
2. That I was married on December 31, 2023
3. That I want to file jointly
4. Didn't make money in other states, no dependents.
5. Edited spouse info, answering all of the same questions other than 2 and 3 above, which were obviously not asked, including SSN, etc.
The info page looks exacly as it should for filing a joint return as far as I can tell.
If I now go to any section, like Wages and Income, I see a column for 2022 and 2023, but no separate column for the spouse to enter info. If I drill INTO Wages and Income there is also no dual-column for spouse info. Oddly enough though, if I go into the W-2 section at the top, it says "Wayne and Jenn's W-2s" and I can apparently add a W-2 (which I don't need because the spouse does not have one), but there is no similar option for other income to pull in data (1099s of various types from my brokerage, for example) for a spouse.
Do you have a screenshot of what this should look like? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? And thanks for the fast response 🙂
Also, I wondering if having started the return as MFS made it so the ability to add spouse info even after changing to MFJ is just not possible in the software?
I think that I would delete my return and start over. But you should still be able to power through this.
It would be easier on the desktop version of the program where you could edit individual forms but this shouldn't be that hard. Unless you are trying to separate your returns for the state after filing everything should come together just fine.
After you enter your income a pop up will show up saying they don’t need your spouses income from SSI or SSA you make under the minimum requirement to file spouses income, then blocks you out from entering anything else it takes you to the next window.
It is not allowing me to add my wife’s income. From the very beginning I added married and filing jointly. Nowhere did it allow me to add her income. I was able to upload the W2, but there is nowhere for me to add her income. I have been working on this for the past couple hours and nothing is working
When you are entering income on a joint return, every income entry screen will either have a spot with both spouse’s names there, or when you click to enter a W-2, 1099R, etc. it will ask you by name which spouse it is for. You do not have to wait for the software to “ask” you for your spouse’s income. Go to the screens to enter your spouse’s W-2’s, 1099’s, etc. just like you did for your own income. Then look for your spouse’s name there.
