Turbo tax is getting too expensive and not up front about costs and fees making the overall experience incredibly frustrating. Not going to file next year with Turbo tax.

Just finished my tax return and was appalled that the price went up AGAIN from last  year. I’m dumping turbo tax next year. I’m just sorry I didn’t switch this year. By the time you see the price you already spent hours doing your return. They should bring back ReadyReturn, it’s defunct now because Intuit lobbied to kill it.

I wish I saw your post earlier. This is my 4th year with Turbo Tax. Just finished tax return for 2019. Their email keep saying free, but they charge for both federal and state, and the combined fee is no less than a CPA's rate. The price did not show till everything is about to go.  No audition support either without additional charge. Deceiving advertisement and communication. Disappointing ethics.

I started to file with turbotax. I am a 3 year return customer.

when I got to end I found out your price.  It was going to cost me $260.  Whoaaaa.  I stoped and deleted everything.

I will not return unless you reduce your fees.

IRS Free File can save families money; find tax benefits all for free

IR-2020-15, January 17, 2020

WASHINGTON — IRS Free File can save families, especially those with children, some money in 2020 plus find tax benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Free File is now available at IRS.gov/freefile.

Since its 2003 debut, Free File has served nearly 57 million taxpayers, saving them $1.7 billion using a very conservative $30 preparation fee. Young families with children are key beneficiaries of Free File, the public-private partnership between the IRS and 10 online tax preparation software providers.

"Free File can save young families money. It offers free software, free electronic filing and free direct deposit which is the fastest way to get a refund," said Ken Corbin, commissioner of IRS' Wage and Investment division.

Whether single or married, the taxpayers' 2019 adjusted gross income must be $69,000 or less to be eligible for free online tax preparation through Free File. Free File can help families find the tax credits and deduction they are due such as EITC. By answering a few questions, taxpayers can find out if they're eligible for EITC and other family-related tax benefits.

The IRS will begin processing tax returns on January 27. Most refunds are issued within 21 days. With Free File, you can even use any digital device, personal computer, tablet or smart phone. Free File products are mobile enabled so you can do your taxes on your smart phone or tablet and e-File with your hand-held device.

Here's how Free File works:

  1. Go to gov/freefile to see all Free File options.
  2. Browse each of the 10 offers or use a "look up" tool to help you find the right product. Each Free File partner sets its own eligibility standards generally based on income, age and state residency. But if your adjusted gross income was $69,000 or less, you will find at least one free product to use. Two products are in Spanish.
  3. Select a provider and follow the links to their web page to begin your tax return.
  4. Complete and e-file your tax return only if you have all the income and deduction records you need. The fastest way to get a refund is by filing electronically and selecting direct deposit. If you owe, use direct pay or electronic options.

You do not have to be EITC eligible in order to qualify for Free File. Any individual or married couple that meets the income limitation can qualify. First-time filers or college students are key users. Military personnel who meet the income requirement can use any of nine partner products. And seniors who want to file the new Form 1040-SR because they are over 65 and taking the standard deduction also can use Free File.

Remember, if you meet the income requirement you will find at least one free online product. To avoid fees for state tax returns, look for a partner that offers free state tax return preparation or check out your state's tax agency website to see if they are members of the State Free File program.

IRS has 1040 and all instructions for each sequence. I decided to jump the turbo bandwagon and learn to do taxes myself. Paid only $2 for the stamps! Saved $107... I’ve been a user for 5 years. Knowledge is key, Turbo is a very expensive convenience tool.

Thats just the federal though, then they want to hit you for 50 more dollars to file state.  I used to pay 59.99 to file both now its 140.00 to do the same return I have been doing for the last 7 years and the program has not changed much to benefit me for the nearly triple cost it has risen.

Then use the TurboTax desktop editions since they include one state program included in the purchase price (except Basic), eg Deluxe $79.99 - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

I have been a customer for 11 years. What’s that in dog years for tech stuff like centuries. I’m a retired social security guy with a very small amount of money. The software companies made a deal years ago with our IRS to provide filing products to the citizens for a low price to keep the IRS from developing their own free software. I am sick of TurboTax charging me what they do for my paltry return. Nearly 150 this year to get a 39 dollar refund which was merely over withholding on one small income account. To boot they whack me for my state return. I am going to bring this issue up with my state attorney general after the corona virus crisis passes. Basically I like the product but it’s cutting in to my ability to buy things like food. The other thing that irks me is that even though I am in poverty by all definitions TurboTax intimidates you in to expensive up selling at the slightest complexity. It’s BS. I am not a happy customer.

I've used TurboTax for 13 years now and this is the last year. Fees did get more expensive. My teenage son did his taxes for the second time on TurboTax. He grossed $5000 for the year and had a total refund of $280 which TurboTax charged him $120!

He could have used the Free File website.  Too bad he didn't ask first, we would have given him the link.

Turbo Tax tricked me into paying for the deluxe edition. Your business model takes advantage of a system that was intended to provide free tax filing. I will never use this product again.

LOL, free to e-file once you pay the $50.00 charge for what you don't want or need. My last Turbo filing!

FYI for the future ... the IRS FREE FILE has 10 options to file for free if your AGI was $69K or less for the 2019 tax year ... you MUST access this thru the IRS site which goes live mid January  ...  https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
