TurboTax should ask about the student status if you have entered the birthdate correctly. You might try deleting the dependent and re-adding him. On the other hand, there is absolutely no penalty or reason not to delete your son completely from your return. If he can be claimed as a dependent next year, you can simply list him again. It doesn’t change anything with the IRS.
If you are not claiming your son as your dependent then you have to remove anything about him from your tax return. He has already filed his own return saying he cannot be claimed, you say. If you have him listed on your return (and there is no such thing as listing him just to keep him on there in case you want him there next year) then you cannot e-file this year. If you claim him as your dependent you have to mail your own return, and he will have to amend his return IF he can be claimed.
Not sure what you mean by "my daughter is correctly listed as a non-dependent but she has a job.." That does not make sense either. If your daughter is not your dependent then she should not be on your tax return either.
Please review the rules for claiming dependents and use the interactive IRS tool to determine who you can claim (and list on your tax return.)
WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?
You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2019 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:
Qualifying child
• They are related to you.
• They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
• They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
• They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.
• They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
• They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
Qualifying relative
• They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
• They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
• They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
• They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.
• They lived with you the entire year.
• They made less than $4200 (not counting Social Security)
• You provided more than half of their financial support. More info
When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.

• Does a dependent have to live with me?
• What does "financially support another person" mean?

A former dependent can be listed in the TurboTax program as “not a dependent this year.“ That information is not transmitted to the IRS of course. It may be a convenience for the taxpayer if the person’s status may change in the future.
@Opus 17 Thanks!--that is news to me. Just did not want the user to think they could list the child on the Form 1040.
