This year, it's line 2a plus line 7.
..….assuming that is the exact MAGI you are needing...because some MAGIs use some other modifications.
Theres no Line 7 on 1040 2019 form just Line 7A, Line 7B
I am working on tax year 2019. From previous comments seems like different years and different 1040's have different lines for what they want from us. I went back to a 2016 1040 form to figure out what they want. 8b would be the line that would show your Tax exempt interest, which for 2019 form would be line 2a. Line 37 is your Adjusted Gross Income which for 2019 is line 8b. I didn't calculate the items using form 2555 or 2555-EZ. Finally, what they want you to do is if your child received Social Security benefits is to subtract the taxable amount of Social Security (line5b [2019 year]) from the total Social Security benefit (line 5a [2019 year]) your child received. This number then would be added to your Adjusted Gross Income + tax exempt interest resulting in your MAGI. For 2019 1040 Form, those numbers would be (5a-5b) +(8b+2a)=MAGI (this formula is for 2019 Federal Tax 1040 Form. Also, remember to do what is in parenthesis first before adding the numbers together). If your doing a different year and the line numbers are different, just look at your form and find the lines that say what I have in Bold type above to calculate MAGI. Hope this helps someone.
