No ---there is no tax credit for claiming yourself and saying that you are disabled. And as for someone else getting a credit for claiming you...if you are over the age of 16, the only credit they get for claiming you as a dependent is a $500 credit for other dependents. There is no special federal tax credit for claiming a disabled dependent.
If your only income was SSI or Social Security with no tax withheld, then you do not have to file a tax return, and would not be eligible for a tax refund or tax credit. If you have a 1095A for having marketplace health insurance you are required to file a tax return even if your only income was Social Security.
If someone claims you as a dependent they might be able to get the Child & Dependent Care Credit even if you don’t file a tax return. If you do file your own return you would have to say someone else can claim you.
Who can they claim for the Child and Dependent Care Credit
Who is a Qualifying Person for the Child and Dependent Care Credit?
If the person who claimed you as a dependent had to pay someone else to care for you while they were at work, they could possibly get the child and dependent care credit for paying someone---but that is not a refundable credit. It reduces the tax they owe. And....again, sorry...it is not a credit available to you.
For you:
Under normal tax laws, there is no free money for being disabled or claiming a dependent. These credits can reduce your taxes (if you owe taxes). The dependent credit can pay you some money even if you don't owe taxes, but only if you have income earned from working.
There was a temporary change during the pandemic, but that expired. For 2024, if your only income is SSA, it is not taxable and there are no refundable credits.
However, Turbotax is "free to start" online, so you can always start a return and see for yourself. When you get to the end and you don't owe and don't get a refund, you can stop without completing the filing process.
For someone else who could claim you:
If there is someone else who can claim you as a dependent, you do not need to file a return just for that reason. You only need to file if you have other income that is not from SSA. Your SSA income is NOT included on the other person's tax return.
