Tax Year Prior to 2020: Are you required to file your 1098-T form?

Hi, was your Box 5 amount larger than box 1? I'm asking because entering my 1098-t lowered my return to, but I'm not sure if I should bother with H&R block if I'll get the same outcome.

If line 5 is more than line 1 then that is counted as income and when you report the 1098-T it will lower your refund. However, if you have additional costs of books, supplies, or equipment that were required for attendance and they were not included in line 1 then you can claim those expenses to offset that income.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Are you required to file your 1098-T form?

I don't understand any of this. It is all so confusing when you are talking 1098-T because most of the time it is the parent filing the form, not the student. But, it always talks as if it is the student entering it on their tax form.

My child's school changed their method of reporting in 2018 and stopped using Box 2, shifting to Box 1. That year's 1098-T did not look right to me at all, but I could not get the college to tell me how they arrived at the amount in Box 1. It just didn't add up at all and looked like more than it should be. When I asked them to explain how they got the figure, they just said they could not give me tax advice, no matter how many times I told them I wasn't asking for advice. I just wanted the number broken out as to how they got it - what fees, tuition, etc. It was far bigger than Box 5 and didn’t hurt me on my taxes, so I finally just gave up and used what they gave me.

Now, in 2019, after days of trying to decipher the 2019 1098-T, I have finally figured out that for some reason they have split up what my child owed in some strange way that makes no sense, shifting a huge chunk to 2018, leaving 2019 a very small amount owed, and making it look like she owes taxes on a huge sum of scholarship, when in reality the entire amount was used for Tuition and qualified fees. In fact, I did pay all that we owed in Dec 2018 for the Spring 2019 semester, but it doesn’t reflect that amount or any other known numbers logically. And, we still had to pay another huge sum out-of-pocket and with student loans for the remainder of fees and room/board. There is no way she should owe taxes on her scholarship that didn’t cover the entire tuition, let alone over $1,000 of taxes!

So, my question is, if I have statements and receipts showing that my child owed more in tuition and fees than they got in scholarship money over those 2 messed up years, can we safely just not add the 1098-T to her taxes since she was still considered a dependent in 2019 and the form went on our parental tax return - even though we didn't get any educational credit since that was already exhausted the previous 4 years?

Do I somehow need to note or enter on one of the tax forms that the qualified tuition was more than stated on this year's 1098-T? Or, do I call the extremely unhelpful college and ask them to correct it - which I'm sure they won't since I tried that last year?

Other than the scholarships, the only other income was work-study that wasn't enough to even need to file, but because it was in another state, our child has to file a state tax return.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Are you required to file your 1098-T form?

Agreed! My child's 1098-T for 2018 was totally messed up. The amount in Box 5 was okay, but not Box 1. They are so terrified of "giving tax" advice that I could not get them to explain how they arrived at the amount in Box 1. It seemed pretty simple to me - tuition plus 2 other fees should have been the total - but it wasn't.

It is only now after receiving the 2019 1098-T that I see that the two different years add up to make the correct total for box 1. But, there is no rhyme nor reason how they arrived at the figures in Box 1 for either year! It looked completely arbitrary. And, now it looks like my student got a ton of scholarship with very little expenses.
So, if my child doesn't have to report it, will they get in trouble if the government sees this imbalance caused by what I think is an artifact of reporting? I'd love to make the school give me corrected 1098-Ts, but I know they won't.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Are you required to file your 1098-T form?

I paid all my child's tuition and fees in Dec 2018 for Spring 2019. But, the school applied part of the Spring 2019 fees to Box 1 on the 2018 1098-T and part to the 2019 1098-T - in no logical manner. It looked like they threw a dart to decide what to put on the form.

The college waited until Spring 2019 to apply the Spring 2019 scholarship - which they reported in Box 5. And, it looks somehow like they are showing $4,000 more in scholarship money than she received. I think it has something to do with the Spring 2018 Study Abroad in which we had to pay part of that semester to another organization and part to her degree-seeking college for the rest of normal tuition in almost exactly that amount.

Thus, now it looks like my student owes taxes on nearly $18,00 in scholarship money when they should owe nothing.

The college won't even talk about it to me because they don't want to give "tax advice". What good is a scholarship if you have to take out a personal loan to pay the taxes on it?

Do I just put the total amount of tuition in qualified expenses, write a letter, somehow force the college to provide a corrected 1098-T (good luck), or what? What do I do?

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Are you required to file your 1098-T form?

What if most/all of the scholarship went to qualified tuition and fees, but we paid it in Dec 2018 and the school only reported part of that payment in 2018 and part in 2019, causing there to be a huge amount in Box 5 in 2019 and hardly anything in Box 1? Can we put all that tuition in the Books and Fees field in TT to bring it down the way it should be?

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Are you required to file your 1098-T form?

The box 1098-T was correct for 2019, but not the Box 1.

The bill for the Spring 2019 semester from the college was received in Dec 2018 and I paid it. But, the college applied some of the expenses for Spring 2019 to the 2018 1098-T and some to the 2019 1098-T. Yet, the college reported ALL of the scholarship for Spring 2019 in 2019.

I am so confused? Why doesn't it ask if the amount in Box 1 is incorrect instead? That would make my life simpler and reflect the reality!

So, are you saying that I can tell TT that some of the aid included amounts not awarded for 2019 expenses? That the amount reported in Box 5 on the 1098-T for 2019 was not all for 2019 since the bill and payment was in 2018, even though the semester was in 2019?

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Are you required to file your 1098-T form?

Yes, that is true. It is taxable if it is used for anything other than tuition and qualified fees and qualified books and supplies. If you use the money just for spending money or for room and board, it is income to you.

If that is the case and you owe income tax, you enter the 1098-T into TT, and, because Box 1 is higher than Box 5, it will calculate your income tax on the excess - if the form is correct and you correctly enter other qualified expenses (which is very confusing in and of itself.

I'm totally confused about the rest when you shouldn't owe money, though! Hope I at least helped you.

No, box 1 is the tuition that was paid.

If box 1 is higher/larger than box 5, you spent more on tuition than what was received by the school as scholarships issued on your behalf. In that case, there is no taxable income and the taxpayer may be entitled to a credit.

Ok ... first this is NOT live chat ... it is a forum so you must wait for a reply.

Next ... the 1098-T is not sent with an amended return ... the form 8863 is.
