It is the IRS rejecting the return, no would know why the IRS is rejecting it.

What if I entered the correct AGI and I’m still getting an e-file reject?

There are a few possible reasons why you’re still getting an e-file reject.

If you:

  • Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0.
  • Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A).
  • Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less.
  • Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2018 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter 0 for one of you).

If you’re still having trouble, we suggest that you check with the IRS to make sure that the copy of your return is the same as what they have in their records. To do this, you can order a tax return transcript

If you’ve tried everything and nothing works, you can still file a paper return by printing out copies of your federal and state returns and mailing them. We’ll include File by Mail Instructions on where to send your returns and what forms, if any, you need to include.

---------------------------------

Not sure if you can get through, but you can try to call the IRS & see what they have on file for your 2018 AGI.

The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040, and they are available from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The best time to call is early in the morning.

- The first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language.
- Once you’ve set your language, do NOT choose Option 1 (regarding refund info). Choose option 2 for “Personal Income Tax” instead.
- Next, press 1 for “form, tax history, or payment”.
- Next, press 3 “for all other questions.”
-Next, press 2 “for all other questions.”
- When the system asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, do NOT enter anything.
-After it asks twice, you will be prompted with another menu.
-Finally, press 2 for personal or individual tax questions. The system should then transfer you to an agent.

If you filed a joint return with your spouse in 2018, use the same number from that return for her AGI.  If she did not file a return use a zero.  If she filed a separate return use the amount from her return.

I filed a joint return in 2018, and nowhere were my spouse or my AGI different.  But the IRS rejected my tax submission  twice because my spouse's AGI  didn't agreed with their records.  In both cases Turbotax  put in the correct AGI for our 2018 filing.  None of the Turbotax suggested reasons applied to me.  There is a software problem either in Turbotax or in the IRS software.

It is the IRS who is rejecting your return not TurboTax.  You might try to get a 2018 transcript to see what the IRS has.

I visited one of the Turbotax sup[ort groups, and it appears I'm not alone,  The problem occurs if your spouse died in 2019.  The IRS said my wife's 2018 AGI doesn't agree with IRS records.  We filed a joint return in 2018 as we usually do.  Turbotax remembered the 2018 AGI and filled it in, and I verified the value from my 2018 return.  When I resubmitted my Turbotax tax forms, which stated that my wife's AGI was our correct joint return AGI.  The IRS again rejected my return for the same reason.

Unfortunately there now appears to be no way to contact the IRS.  Do you know of a manner in which I relay my problem to the IRS?  You must have better connections with the IRS than I do!

Sincerely ,

Oscar Sander

I'm experiencing the exact same issue here. Did you find a fix for that?

@jinrui1130 Not sure why you are posting to this old thread about e-filing a 2018 return.   The only tax year that can be e-filed is 2021.   No other year can be e-filed.   If you are trying to e-file a 2021 return and the AGI is causing rejections, try using zero instead of your AGI.

Because I am now having the same issue as him for my 2021 tax return. I tried with 0 as my spouse AGI, it was not working.

If you have any other solutions, please let me know. Thanks

If your AGI will not work and zero will not work to let you e-file, then print , sign and date it in ink, and file by mail.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
