Program will not allow me to enter SSA-1099 amounts (1/3/2025)
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Are you entering it in the right place?
Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.
Yes...I click on Update and it takes me to screen about SS not being taxes in certain countries. I click on NO and it brings me back to the original page where the update is...
You may need to talk with customer support. But....I am curious.....how do you already even have a SSA1099 on January 3? Social Security mails them in January and it seems pretty early for anyone to have one yet.

Where in the program are you clicking on Update?
Nowhere in the TurboTax program is any statement concerning SS in certain countries. You are reporting an SSA-1099 which is Only for a US tax return.
To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button
Yeah, I received a notification from SS the other day (31 Dec) about a new message in my SS account.
I logged in separately (never trust an email), and there was a 2024 SSA-1099SM there to download.
I think there was some text in the message about it containing "expected" values (or words to that effect)...so not sure it will be the final values...but numbers look right (Will wait for the final paper one and doublecheck then)
I knew someone would ask that question 🙂 They upload an initial Form SSA-1099SM on my SS page with all the information...I figured I would enter info and update when the final form arrived...
After I get the above screen and hit continue I go back to the original screen with the Start or Update....
After you have selected No on those screens you have finished entering your Social Security benefits information.
Those screens are only shown after you have entered the amount of box 5 of the SSA-1099.
When you are back on the Wages & Income selection page, the amount of the SS benefits you entered from box 5 of the SSA-1099 will be shown for 2024.
Did you transfer from 2023 to start? Are you using the Online version or Desktop program?
One problem people have…..
If you can't enter your Social Security in the boxes try deleting the form. See this thread for things to try. There are posts for 2023 at the end
In the box with $0 income double-click in that box and a Supporting Details window should open where you can enter the correct amount. Or highlight the box and use Ctrl + I to open the Supporting Details window
Hello all...I spoke with support and they don't seem to know how to fix the problem I am having...Sent me a new license product and it did the same... Waiting for a call back...
I'm curious...do you have desktop copy of the Deluxe product and can you try clicking on the SSA-1099 Start to see if you get screen to enter amounts...
Thanks...
@jimmy5609 I am using the 2024 TurboTax Premier edition for Windows.
Do you ever get to this screen to enter the SS benefits??????
No...
I'll let you know the outcome when they call back....
Thanks all....
