@arbe If you are using the TurboTax desktop editions for Windows, try this procedure -

Save your tax return and close the TurboTax program

Right click on the TurboTax icon

Click on Properties

Click on the Compatibility tab

Check the box Run this program as an administrator

Click on Apply and OK

Start the TurboTax program again and continue your tax return.  See if the problem with entering Social Security benefits persists.  Reply back if still an issue.

If you are using the 2024 TurboTax desktop editions for Windows -

Save your tax return

Exit the TurboTax program

Right click on on the TurboTax icon 

Click on Run as administrator

Start the TurboTax program and see if the problem persists

I have an exactly same problem.  When I click the update social security button, the screen briefly becomes blank and then reappears the page of the different type of incomes to choose from.

I am using the Mac version. Fnally got my social security information in by getting out of the 'easy step' portion of Turbo Tax, going to the forms section, and opening the SSA-1099 form. I could then fill in the forms and it seemed to carry over to my form. Didn't have this problem in previous years so it may have been that my filing status changed from '23 to '24. Thanks for the suggestions, though

2024 deluxe desktop version will not allow SS update - just goes in an infinite loop.

I have not encountered any difficulty entering or updating Social Security income in 2024 Deluxe or Home and Business. Are you entering the income using Step by Step?

Or, are you trying to update a Social Security number? Please clarify what steps you have taken that led to the problem.

Go to Forms mode and enter the SS benefits on the Social Security Benefits Worksheet

Click on Forms.  When in Forms mode open the worksheet and enter benefits on Line A

The Forms method may work, but we all paid for the Step by Step method when purchasing the software for download, so TurboTax should acknowledge the problem and fix it.

Step by step as the "administrator" also does not work on desktop Deluxe when trying to input social security benefits.

Thank You.  As you suggested I entered the amonts on the form itself and it worked.  But Turbo Tax needs to correct the problem.   When I click the update box of SS line appears ka page with question regarding living in a country not taxing social security.  After answerin no and clicking continue it takes me back to the income and wages page.  I have used Turbo Tax for well over 20 years and never experienced any problem with it.  Probably AI in the works.

I have reported that some users are experiencing this issue when attempting to enter Social Security. 

You might also try running a manual software update. See this help article for instructions.
