I am single and file zero. I didn't have a job change in 2022 nor a change in tax bracket. Why do I owe thousands of dollars in federal taxes when I usually get a refund? I bought my 1st house in 2022 in IL, but property taxes are paid in arrears so the purchase wouldn't impact my 2022 tax filing.

The best way to find out what happened is to make a line by line comparison of this return and the prior one(s).
Start by double checking all of your entries. The most common reason for a major unexpected change in your tax return is entry errors. Pay close attention to decimal point placements on your W2 entries.
If your entries are correct then you can compare your W2 from last year to your W2 from this year to see if you had the same amount of taxes withheld and about the same income.
