I currently owe the IRS for back taxes due to underreported income in 2023. I filed an ammended return, which will reduce the amount I owe them for 2023 by about $5K. Until they process the amended return (which they received 17 weeks ago), they will assume I owe them a larger amount.
I have prepared my 2024 taxes and am ready to file. I am expecting a very large refund. I know that when I file, the IRS will take what I owe them out, then send me a refund for what's left. If I file now, they are going to take out more than I actually owe, since they haven't processed the 2023 amended return. If I wait and file after they process the amended return, I can expect to receive the correct, larger refund amount.
Is it better to file now, which will result in the IRS owing me money whenever they get around to processing the amended return, or wait? I'm concerned that it will take too long to get the rest of my 2024 refund due.

It would be better to file a little later.
Since you are receiving a tax refund on the 2024 tax return you can e-file your tax return at any time on or before October 15, 2025 without penalty.
