Should I claim head of household if I rent a room which me and my child live in and I pay for every expense for myself and my child? I don't pay for utilities.

If you are not married, yes.

If you are married, see the rules for married persons.

The physical place you live in does not determine whether you can file as Head of Household.

Am I Head of Household?

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

My son rents a room, his rent includes electricity, water, etc. He is single with no children. Can he claim HOH?

No. Head of Household is for Taxpayers that support dependents.

You can qualify for Head of Household if you:

  1. Were unmarried as of December 31 this year and
  2. Paid more than half the cost to run your home for the year(rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.) and
  3. You supported a qualifying person
