Is there a specific version of software needed on my Mac computer to download 2017 taxes next year when it is time to do 2017 taxes?

I know we are currently using 2016 taxes. However, when I downloaded 2016 a message flashed across my screen saying I would not be able to download 2017 without updating something on my computer.  I do not know if it is the operating system or safari.
