Question

Schedule B and 8880 forms.

I was forced to upgrade to the deluxe live edition, and my agent said it was likely because of my schedule B and 8880 forms. I looked around a bit and that all has to do with retirement savings and investment dividends. I have no money in any 401k. the 12 section on my W-2 is clear, and I simply have no investments. The forms will also not delete on the tax tools delete form page. What do I do? I have a simple run of the mill tax return and I don't understand why it isn't working with the free federal file.

A simple tax return is one that's filed using IRS Form 1040 only, without having to attach any forms or schedules. Only certain taxpayers are eligible.

Situations covered (assuming no added tax complexity):

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • IRS standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Student loan interest deduction

Situations not covered:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on other forms or schedules (for example, income related to crypto investments)

Yes, but what I'm trying to say is my W-2 is normal. I have no investments or retirement, so I should not have been upgraded, but was.

TurboTax Free Edition is free as long as it is a simple return that files a 1040 with no additional schedules or upgrades. Please see Why am I being charged for TurboTax Free Edition? for more information.
