Great question. Call them up and complain.Their phone reps have little or no clout. And, it seems the issue POSSIBLY never makes it to the software group. The best approach is to call the corporate office and complain heartily! Horrendous support with no feedback. They take customers for granted. Next year I switch to a competitor tax software program.
So TurboTax advertises accuracy guaranteed.
Can i get a refund?
Here is how to submit documentation for accuracy guarantee claims.
I have tried ALL of the RMD "fixes" recommended here and elsewhere and still cannot get passed this glitch. When exactly can I expect a real fix from turbotax? It's quite frustrating!
Please see Why am I getting an RMD distribution amount error? to be notified when the error is fixed.
It's amazing that TurboTax cannot fix a problem so simple and straight forward. How hard is it to sum up all the distributions of all IRAs and the RMD of all IRAs?
I don't have any social media account, otherwise, I would have used them to inform friends of this Turbo Tax problem.
TurboTax is getting really cocky.
Like others, I am waiting for the fix. I dread switching to another tax preparation program but I may be forced to do so. Does anyone have any positive experience with Tax Slayer? They look pretty good but I wonder how hard it would be to start from scratch with new software. I've been using TurboTax for as long as I can remember, maybe 10-15 years.
Hi all-
I offered a fix about three weeks ago and by all accounts of others, it works. Simply enter the same amount for your RMD each time it is requested. Do not put cents in there only round up or down consistently as the case may be. I did that as a fix as well as others and it has worked for all. Not sure why others are having a problem here. The glitch in the software is that one of the pages fails to round up or down cents to the nearest dollar as the case may be. That is why you have to do it consistently. Every time it calls for your RMD make sure you consistently report it to the nearest dollar.
Thanks for trying to help but when I get to the page entitled, "Let's check if ________ met the minimum distribution requirement" I'm seeing, in RED, "We recommend waiting to file your taxes." "We're working on some updates related to _________'s required minimum distribution, but you can still work on other parts of your tax return. Please check back here later on."
I would assume my problem is different from others. For my return, the total RMD was withdrawn from two IRA accounts and the sum of the two withdrawals satisfied the 2024 RMD. However, TT does not combine the two amounts but calculates that each one falls short individually resulting in assessing a penalty on both accounts. I've already entered the exact same amount of the 2024 RMD each time it is requested rounded to the whole number up or down, as appropriate. So I'm afraid I'm stuck waiting for TT to fix their program. Thanks anyway for your suggestion.
Tried it, didn't work. I could list all my tries but at this point frankly I've pretty much given up on the forum being much help.
Please let me know the name of the program you will be using. I am giving up on TT re: this RMD issue. Too much time wasted with "tax experts" who keep putting me on hold to research this issue and come back with absurd emails.
EVERYONE…..
The 1099R RMD questions were fixed on Feb 20, 2025! If you are using the Desktop program be sure to update your program. Go back though and revisit your 1099R entries.
You need to go back through the 1099R entries and revisit all the answers. The questions have changed so your prior answers won’t be right especially if you answered them with a work around to make them come out right. I would delete that 1099R and enter it again manually. That usually fixes it and resets the questions.
To answer Jeannette, the remarks from VolvoGirl have worked for me. While waiting for a product refund I found VolvoGirl's message that the TT software had been updated and when I exited and reopened my app I saw the new RMD questions and I was able to finish and file my taxes. Hope you have the same experience.
I offered a solution herein several weeks ago, and it worked for me, and I filed my taxes and got my state and federal refunds. Yesterday, I did the updates, subsequent to my filing, and answered all the RMD questions that have since been entered on the software, and still came up with the same refunds for state and federal. So, in other words, at least for me, my proposed fix back about a month ago was accurate. I think what happened after my proposal is that they did several attempts to update the software on the RMD and that just complicated things further. At least for me and others herein it was simply a rounding error that the software failed. nonetheless, I am likely to switch to a competitor tax prep software program next year after at least 20 years using TurboTax. Intuit is pathetic!
Unfortunately, I have tried the rounding "fix" and am still having issues with the RMD. My RMD and my distributions were the same. I've rounded each of the 3 accounts and I still keep getting errors wanting me to take out the RMD amount and unchecking the "Yes" this is an RMD box. Both of which are incorrect and even if I do that, it then gives me an error wanting me to put the RMD amount back in. Just a circle. I have spent 3 weeks and numerous calls with TurboTax only to be told to pay for the "Full Service Expert" and have them file my taxes! (I doubt that would resolve the issue) I tried to sign up for it, was waiting for the "expert" to call, then got an email stating "We've closed your full service experience for you"! Vicious circle.
