Rejected return from prior year

You do not mention the reason for the rejection.  When it was rejected you received an email with a rejection code or rejection message.  We cannot see that message.  Most rejections are for AGI.  The AGI no longer matters because you only needed AGI to e-file.  A 2022 return cannot be e-filed now; it can only be filed by mail.   You have to print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it.

If there is something else you need to "fix" or change on the 2022 return, you have to use the CD/download software on a full PC or Mac in order to make changes before you print it and mail it.

You will be able to access the 2022 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Start a 2023 return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2022 returns is now permanently closed.

Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2022 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Mon-Fri

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Rejected return from prior year

When the 2022 tax return was rejected in 2023 you received an email from TurboTax which has the rejection code and rejection message from the IRS.

Most e-file rejections from the IRS are due to the prior year AGI entered on the tax return.  Since a 2022 tax return can no longer be e-filed, the 2021AGI is not used.

You will need to print, sign, date and mail the tax return to the IRS.  Include with the mailed tax return all forms W-2 and 1099 which have taxes withheld.  Along with the Form 1040 include all forms and schedules which have an Attachment Sequence Number located in the upper right corner of the form or schedule.

Go to this IRS website for the mailing address, by state, with and without a payment - https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment

There are no penalties for filing a tax return with a tax refund after the due date of the tax return.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Start the 2023 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

Rejected return from prior year

If you tried to e-file a 2022 return now, it was rejected because Turbotax can't e-file prior year returns.  Print the return, sign it, and mail it in.  Make sure you are using the 2022 version of Turbotax.  Remember that the online version is current year 2023 only.  If you need to file a 2022 return, you need to purchase the 2022 program to install on your own computer.

If you tried to e-file a 2022 return last year and it was rejected, and you just found out, you need to print the return and mail it to the IRS.
