You prepare and file a tax return, and the money you get back is a refund.    So.....your tax return was rejected.  Provide some details.  Did you claim a child as a dependent?  Did someone else claim the same child on a tax return?  Was it rejected with a message about the duplicate use of a SSN?    Who does the child live with?

If you are the person who can claim the child as a dependent, then print, sign and date your return in ink, and file it by mail.  The IRS will sort out the duplicate use of the child's SSN.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

If you were rejected because of a dependent, it is probably because someone else has claimed the child already.

  • First check to be sure the Social Security Number is correct.
  • If it is, do you know of anyone else that might claim the child.
  • If you do, you can discuss who should claim them.
  • If you don't know who it is, or you can't come to an agreement, you can file your tax return by Mail.
  • The IRS will send both you, and whoever the other person is that claimed the child, a tax notice.
  • They will require documentation from both of you to substantiate your claim to the child dependency.
