If you were rejected because of a dependent, it is probably because someone else has claimed the child already.
- First check to be sure the Social Security Number is correct.
- If it is, do you know of anyone else that might claim the child.
- If you do, you can discuss who should claim them.
- If you don't know who it is, or you can't come to an agreement, you can file your tax return by Mail.
- The IRS will send both you, and whoever the other person is that claimed the child, a tax notice.
- They will require documentation from both of you to substantiate your claim to the child dependency.
