Recovery Rebate Credit/3rd stimulus ck (2021 Tax Year)

My 21yr old son worked in 2020 so he received all his stimulus checks including the 3rd one in 2021. He filed his own taxes for 2020. My son never filed taxes before and was always my dependent on taxes prior years.  In 2021 he did not work at all and won't be filing taxes for last year. I am doing my taxes now and will be claiming him as a dependent for 2021. When I get to the part where turbo tax asked me how much I received in 3rd stimulus I input $2,800 (myself and spouse). It said I was underpaid $1200 and will recover additional $1200. Is this correct?

The amount of the 3rd EIP is $1400 unless your income is too high and it is being phased out.   But, even if your son received the 3rd EIP himself last year, if you can claim him on your own tax return for 2021, then due to a loophole left by Congress, you can get the 3rd EIP for claiming your son on your 2021 return.  It will show up on line 30 of your Form 1040.

Yes, you will only input the amount you received which you mentioned was $2,800. You will not include the the checks your son received. If all the income and dependency criteria are met, you will be able to claim the stimulus payment for your child. However, you mentioned that you will get and additional $1,200. However, the third stimulus check which was received in 2021, was for $1,400 and not $1,200 so please make sure you verify the amounts.
