Receiving Missing Stimulus Money

My son, no longer a dependent, did not receive any stimulus dollars based on previous filings as a dependent of our.  He was eligible for both checks.  Our account files our taxes and recovered stimulus money we were entitled to but did not receive.  When my son files through TurboTax, how does he file to receive the missing dollars unreceived?  Thanks!

Receiving Missing Stimulus Money

If your son CANNOT be claimed as a dependent on a 2020 tax return, he can use the recovery rebate credit on his own 2020 return to get the stimulus checks.

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check in 2020, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the FEDERAL REVIEW section. ( you should see "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount”)  If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

Make sure that you enter ALL of the stimulus money received for the 1st and 2nd stimulus for yourself, your spouse and your children.

Receiving Missing Stimulus Money

Yes, as noted by @xmasbaby earlier if he is not your dependent.  When your son inputs his personal information in the "My Info" section he will be asked if he "Can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2020 tax return?"  He will answer "No."  Will someone claim him? He again answers "No."

Next, after entering his income and deduction information he will arrive at the "Federal Review" section. There he will indicate that he did not receive any stimulus payments. If the stimulus questions do come up automatically, he can select the "Federal Review" tab or type "Stimulus" in the search box and use the "Jump to... link" to get the stimulus questions.

The missing stimulus amounts will be added to his return as a Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of his form 1040 as noted in an earlier post.

The 2020 tax return, once processed will establish his eligibility for the third round payment as well.  It will be sent separately.
