Its not true that you HAVE TO paper file if using 7202. IRS posted instructions on how to efile and attach 7202 as pdf or include the info separately elsewhere in your return.
Its only true that you'd have to paper file w 7202 if you're sticking w turbotax no matter what. Bc its turbotax that's not making accommodations for thier customers.
TurboTax has worked hard with the IRS to be able to e-file this form. Since this will require programming adjustments for both the IRS and TurboTax, it will be a few weeks before these changes are made. If you wish to file this form, you have the following options:
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions on how to do this.
So when will the online filing of 7202 be available for Turbotax?
Read Page 13.
The online filing for form 7202-T is available now, but is unsupported for e-filing. This form can only be filed by mail. Please see this TurboTax FAQ, IRS forms availability table for TurboTax individu...
Per IRS rules, it IS NOT TRUE that this form can only be mailed.
What seems to be true is that turbotax is the only tax software company who not only won't attach a pdf to their clients return (but has no problem attaching a pdf for the 3rd party billing company they use to deduct the payment owed to them from our return)- they also are thr only ones insisting it MUST be mailed. It's been 4 since the IRS modified instructions. Saying it has to be mailed is a lie at this point.
And even if turbotax won't attach a pdf to our efiling, IRS says a statement with all the same info from 7202 would suffice. So turbotax could essentially just include thier own version of 7202 questions when doing the return so it can be efiled. IRS is pretty clear about not wanting paper files and is willing to accept alternatives. Turbotax is a TAX SOFTWARE COMPANY. This shouldn't be an issue. They definitely shouldn't be so misleading. Tomorrow, when I go to file my return, if turbotax tells me AGAIN "sorry, but you cannot efile with form 7202 but no worries! We'll help you print out your return so you can paper file" I'm switching to a different tax software. It'll suck having to input all my info again but the good news is I have lots of software to chose from as turbotax seems to be the only one not making accommodations for thier customers! I don't even need my refund money- but turbotax doesn't know that and I'm really uncomfortable with the deception.
Originally, TurboTax was not going to e-file Form 7202. However, that has recently changed. The IRS will be allowing filers with Form 7202 to have the ability to e-file their return. Our engineers are working hard on updating the program to accommodate the changes. Until the program is updated for each form, customers will need to paper file their returns. If you want to e-file, you will need to wait until the program has been updated.
The following dates are when we expect to have e-filing available for each form (Note: these are approximate dates):
Thank you @DawnC ! Now I know to wait a few weeks to finalize my return with the 7202, and it's a relief that I might eventually e-file it. The people who really do need to file these two forms are among the hardest hit by coronavirus so you've done us all a great deal of help with the update. Please share that with your engineering team as well.
Hey Guys,
GREAT NEWS! Today I was reviewing my taxes with a Turbo Tax representative. They have confirmed that Form 7202 will be available for E-File on March 11th, possibly even sooner. Hold steady everyone! It is not worth mailing in your return. The IRS website is urging people to e-file. Directly from the IRS website "...Taxpayers who filed a paper return, and expects a refund may experience a significant delay beyond the normal time frame of four to six weeks from the time they mailed their return" They have limited staff due to COVID-19.
Form 7202 will be available for E-file on Turbo Tax March 11th or sooner!
I wouldn't consider home and business as "personal prep tax products. " I really wish you would send out an update so this form can be attached to efile.

that's great news! I will wait for the update.
Again- not true. Those are NOT our only options.
Other tax software companies are making the accommodations listed below for thier customers.
I am filing with one of these other companies on Friday. If and when its accepted by the IRS I'll repost.
Saying that our only options are to paper file or wait until turbotax catches up is deceptive. Some people cannot afford to wait when there are other options. An honest response would be "turbotax won't be able to process efiled returns w form 7202 until March 11".
