TurboTax won't be able to e-file a tax return that includes Form 7202 until March 11 (this is a tentative date). You have the option to e-file the form now, but it is advised to wait until you can e-file the form as it (and the rest of your return) will be processed much quicker.
Our engineers are working hard on updating the program to accommodate the changes referenced in the IRS link you provided. Originally, TurboTax was not going to e-file Form 7202. However, that has recently changed due to the number of taxpayers utilizing the tax relief provided by covid tax credits. @t2thedoc1
I believe that this is apples and oranges. Two different things. Some providers are attaching the 7202 as a PDF attachment, not an e-file form that the IRS has not allowed, but is working on providing e-file "schemas" so that it can be e-filed. TurboTax is waiting for the schema to be provided by the IRS.
BTW: You might ask what is the difference between a PDF attachment and a e-file form since they can both be e-filed?
The IRS programs their processing computer to automatically process e-filed forms, but attachments must be flagged and set aside for a human to look at and manually enter - an attachment can be anything. Anything at the IRS that involves humans delays the refund process considerably.
Did you use H&R online and do a self prepared return? I am not able to efile mine with H&R and include the 7202 form.
@SForrestLO From the information you just shared: Turbo Tax is stating that Form 7202 is UNSUPPORTED by Turbo Tax! I've literally been inquiring for weeks about this Form and have been lied to by each Representative. All your Reps are regurgitating the same misinformation. "Turbo Tax is wait for the IRS to release the form" then, it was "Update the form BY THE 25TH!" After waiting weeks to file my return someone FINAL ADMITS that you AREN'T EVEN GOING TO SUPPORT E-FILING of FORM 7202. This has become a shameless ploy to string people along! Turbo Tax got what they wanted OUR BLIND LOYALTY, COMPLIANCE AND SERVICE FEES. SPEAKING FOR THE MANY SELF-EMPLOYED MOM AND POP ESTABLISHMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN BRUTALIZED THIS PAST YEAR BY MISFORTUNE. THE LACK OF RESPECT AND EMPATHY EXPRESSED BY YOUR COMPANY, TO YOUR LOAYAL PATRONS, IS A SLOW TURN OF A DULL KNIFE IN THE BACK OF BLUE COLLAR AMERICA!
I thought I would post a follow-up. I did end up filing with TaxSlayer, entirely because of TurboTax's issues with form 7202. I filed on 2/20, and my federal return was accepted by the IRS that same day. My refund moved to the "Approved" state last week on the IRS refund status page, though I'm not exactly sure when. It says to expect my refund tomorrow, March 1. I believe that makes this year the fastest I've ever gotten a refund, despite form 7202 being sent as an attachment instead of being "e-filed."
It is a HUGE relief that Turbotax has plans to support electronic filing of Form 7202. Like so many others, our income was cut drastically due to COVID-19 and the funds provided by the credit are seriously needed. Waiting 6-8+ weeks would have been disastrous. Thank you Turbotax for listening to the community!
After years w turbo tax I also decided to go w a different company only bc of 7202. Freetaxusa. I filed just yesterday but that's further than I was able to get w turbotax...freetaxusa made adjustments so we'd be able to efile and attach 7202. The BEST part is I got the same service I choose w turbotax...self employed, audit support, storage of tax return ect and it cost $25. I've been paying turbotax over $200 a year for the same stuff. And I did NOT have to start fresh by putting all my info in! Freetaxusa has it set up where you can transfer your efiled returns from other companies such as hnrblock, Jackson Hewitt, turbotax, ect straight into thier system so you just have to input this years numbers.
I'm almost grateful this disaster happened w 7202 n tt!!
Are you sure it will be delayed as an attachment? Because I already got my refund.. it was less than 2 weeks. H&R online. Maybe I’m lucky?
We all know what the form is. The original question remains. Will TurboTax eventually be able to efile claims with 7202? If so, timeline? Will it be this year? I'd like to efile and am willing to wait...for awhile.
There is a response above that indicates that March 11 is the tentative date for a Turbotax update to address the issue.
The issue isn't about efiling with 7202, its that turbotax still hasn't made the accommodations the IRS put in place so that we can efile and claim these credits anyway. Its not true that you can't efile with form 7202...freetaxusa filed mine, others here used taxslayer. I'm sure turbotax will get around to making these accommodations, but its unfortunate they haven't already...
This starts to get old: sign up at the info link above, wait until March 12th, update the program, e-file federal & state returns, receive refunds - quite straight forward.
