Okay I just filed my taxes and I think I made a mistake. I looked it over and it looked correct with it adding 1/3 of my distribution to my income...but...since covid wasn't available in the drop down menu, i put it in the box that asked for the FEMA number. After I printed my forms, I noticed, that I was not supposed to do that, and was supposed to check box D saying it was a coronavirus disaster distribution. Will I have to amend my return??? It seems like all the calculations are correct, but that I just checked the wrong box??? Turbo tax said it was good and the IRS already accepted it, so should i be worried???
To the recent topic: it made me enter a disaster name and now I can't find anywhere to remove it.
On a different topic: Have been running through this and just wanting to clarify. The 1099 I received in 2020 had federal tax withheld and I split my distribution into 3 years. The tax withheld was only applied to 2021 taxes?

If you elected to spread the 2020 distribution over three years then 1/3 of the distribution will have been entered on the federal tax return Form 1040 on either Line 4b or 5b depending on the type of distribution you had in 2020.

The federal income taxes withheld from the 2020 distribution were only entered on the 2020 tax return as a tax payment. The taxes withheld from the 2020 distribution cannot be spread over 3 years.
If there is an error in the form, which I believe to be true...they should have sent something out to people to let them know, I just filed my taxes and I now I realize I did not check the correct boxes, but it all went through...hoping I do not need to do an amendment....I wish I had waited....looks like it won't be fixed until 3/31 now....
so what do I do, if I just filed my taxes????
me too, just filed, the amunts all looked correct, I just didn't click the correct boxes!! this is so frustrating!! praying it all works out.
Since you e-Filed, you can e-File 1040-X to correct this.
Last year you got one shot to e-File 1040-X.
I'd be surprised if you can e-File 1040-X more than once this year.
I suggest you wait until your 1040 is APPROVED, or April 14th, whichever comes first, to submit 1040-X.
P.S.
Also wait for TurboTax to do it correctly
@fanfare Thank you. I never heard of 1040-X, can I do that through Turbo Tax?? I will wait till its all done correctly. I don't think any of my amounts will change , just boxes that i chec ked wrong....
@DoninGA , so the amount was entered on line 5b, and it is correct...so does it not matter that I did not check the correct box on Form 8915-F?? I put Covid for FEMA number and did not check box D, which was for coronavirsus distribution??

No, it should not matter at all since the correct amount was entered on Line 5b. But since this is a new form it is unknown if the IRS will question this return if box D on the 8915-F was not checked.
Use Form 1040-X to add or correct information on an already filed individual tax return.
1040-X is for amended returns. And yes, TT has the form. But wait until your return has been accepted or after 4/15.
I tried it today, and it lets you get a little further than previous tries but it isn't calculating the taxes at all! This is so frustrating to have to wait this long just to pay taxes!! H and R block is even more confusing and doesn't allow you to say you didn't get a 1099R for 2021 it just wants you to enter the information so I am back to twiddling my thumbs waiting for TT to get it together. This is so frustrating!!!!!
I guess I’m confused. I’ve read over all of todays posts. For me, the tax amount is being compute right and applying 1/3 for this year. What is the problem? What is wrong with just adding Cares Act for the disaster name?
